Project Background

The Tailgate Recycling Program is one component of the Zero Waste Initiative at Ohio Stadium. The program works to divert tailgate materials from the landfill. At this time, The Ohio State University has achieved a 96% waste diversion inside the stadium. Waste diversion is defined as waste that can be composted or recycled and diverted from landfills. The focus of this project, however, will be outside of the stadium during tailgating season.

Currently, each football game generates 14-19 tons of waste outside the stadium with a diversion rate of 11%. Use of red bins has increase this diversion percentage, however, food contamination and lack of awareness hold the percentage low. The main sources of waste outside of the stadium are alcohol and Red Solo cups.

Many tailgaters are unaware that Red Solo cups are not recyclable in Columbus with Rumpke! Food contamination and difficulty of cardboard recycling also contribute to the challenge.
