About Me

My name is Omar Syed and I am majoring in Arabic and studying pre-medicine. I hope to be an anesthesiologist and I want to travel to offer free medical services to impoverished and disaster stricken nations. My main motivation is in my faith as an Ahmadi Muslim because it teaches me that service to humanity is a key and extremely important part of faith and spirituality. My interest in Arabic stems from a desire to further connect with my heritage and religion, and also I hope my knowledge of Arabic will help me be able to more effectively serve the Arab world if my services are needed there. In my free time I enjoy helping out at my Mosque, reading, playing video games, and watching anime.

Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness:
As a student planning to major in Arabic, I am prepared to immerse myself in a new and diverse culture. I am interested in many of the social and political issues in the Arab world today. I have also written a few letters to the editor about some of the conflicts that the US has been involved in in the middle east, such as Syria and Iran. I’m hoping that I can have more informed discussions around the issues after getting a better grasp of Arab culture in general from my studies here at OSU.

Original Inquiry:
I am planning to do medical research on campus around my 2nd or 3rd year. I am hoping to work in the lab alongside medical students and doctors in charge of researching something that I find interesting and that I am dedicated to learning more about.

Academic Enrichment:
I will continue to undertake the more difficult science courses in order to further my studies to become a medical student and in addition, I intend to pursue higher level Arabic courses as they become available to me.

Leadership Development:
I am involved with my Mosque’s local youth organization Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Columbus and serve as the General Secretary at the youth level. I have been in charge of coordinating most of our events and working with all the members to being them to said events. My style of leadership is one of leading by example. I always make sure that I am doing something first before telling others, and I always work with helping and understanding those I work with, seeing everyone as a friend or a partner rather than a superior to subordinate interaction.

Service Engagement:
I work with my local youth organization in a variety of service projects including Adopt a Highway, packing food for the homeless, and on a general level, maintenance of my local Mosque, which includes cleaning the bathrooms, halls, and providing security and other services for events with the community. I am also involved with the Ahmadiyya Muslim Students Association, which works to spread social awarenss and dispel myths about Islam in order foster love for all, and hatred for none through “Meet A Muslim” events, in which we take to the streets and answer all the public’s questions about Islam. We also do events where we speak with other student organizations and have a presentation where we talk about our faith and dispel myths as well. These experiences all together make me open-minded to working with people of all different backgrounds, and encourage me to work for and help such a diverse planet.
