This beer is green — and that’s good

“We’ve successfully made a case for why sustainable beer sells and how it can be sourced locally,” said Vincent Valentino, sustainability major manager for Columbus’s Land-Grant Brewing Company, speaking to the Environmental Professionals Network (EPN) recently.

Valentino graduated in the second class of CFAES’s Environment, Economy, Development and Sustainability major.

Tuesday: ‘Lessons in sustainability’ from Columbus craft brewery

The next monthly Environmental Professionals Network (EPN) breakfast program, “Land Grant to Land-Grant: Lessons in Sustainability from a Brewery in Our Backyard,” will feature Columbus’s Land-Grant Brewing Company, a small urban craft brewery.

The speaker, Land-Grant sustainability manager Vincent Valentino, will share “successes, challenges and failures that the brewery has faced in its first year of pursuing sustainability,” the event description says. He’ll also “talk about their partnership with urban farmers, Columbus community groups and where they want to go next.”

The event is tomorrow, Tuesday, Jan. 9, from 7:15 to 9:30 a.m. on Ohio State’s Columbus campus. Read more and register.

New BioHio tenant provides ways for nonprofits to collaborate

Fred Strahorn; Michael Schadek, assistant director for intergovernmental affairs and economic development for the city of Columbus; and representatives from Ohio Rep. Anne Gonzales’s Columbus office, U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown’s Columbus office, Java Central Cafe and Roaster, car2go Columbus, the Land-Grant Brewing Company, Ohiyo Chocolate, Portia’s Café, Fusian, and Wolf’s Ridge Brewing.

April 19: How climate change is affecting small businesses

The nonprofit, nonpartisan climate advocacy group Defend Our Future is hosting a roundtable discussion with Columbus-area small business owners and Columbus and Ohio elected officials on April 19 on Ohio State’s Columbus campus. It’s from 5-8 p.m. in CFAES’s Nationwide and Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center, 2201 Fred Taylor Drive.

A media advisory from the group said the discussion “will touch on the impact climate change is having on small businesses, their bottom lines and consumer preferences and how strong state and national environmental protections, such as those provided by the EPA, are important factors for a healthy and vibrant business community.”

Two high-tech companies based on research done at Ohio State have been named among 2016’s “Best University Startups.” Neurxstem Inc. and 3Bar Biologics Inc. are two of the 36 startup companies to be honored by the National Council of Entrepreneurial Tech Transfer.

3Bar Biologics has developed a unique delivery system for beneficial microbes that provides farmers a natural, biological way to increase their crop yields while potentially lowering costs and improving sustainability of the land. The company was co-founded by Brian McSpadden Gardener, who was a former professor in CFAES’s Department of Plant Pathology and former director of the college’s Organic Food and Farming Education and Research program. Read more.
