Friday: How to see and grow your farm ‘as part of a complex living system’

green world in the heart handThe Ohio Sustainable Farm Tour and Workshop Series continues this Friday, Sept. 9, from 2 to 4 p.m. with the Lessons Learned, Understanding Gained Farm Tour. It’s at Farm 153 in Jefferson in far northeast Ohio. Owners Tim and Barb Loya, the event description says, “see their soil, air, water and plants as part of a complex living system that they build up according to organic methods.” Attendees “will walk away with a list of resources, materials, practices to avoid and practices to embrace.” Details here on p. 32.

With a name like that, it has to be fantastisch

August 6.Red Beet Row. Now that’s a name to remember. It’s a new 14-acre education farm in Jefferson in far northeast Ohio. It uses permaculture and holistic growing and building methods; has a passive solar underground greenhouse, mobile animal shelters, hugelkultur (mound) beds and more; and is hosting the Permaculture and Green Building Farm Tour from 1 to 3:30 p.m. this Saturday, Aug. 6. Permaculture expert, author to speak Dec. 7

Peter Bane, author of The Permaculture Handbook: Garden Farming for Town and Country, will speak this Friday (12/7) at Ohio State in Columbus (pdf). Free. All are welcome. It’s part of a tour in support of the book, which came out in June.

Permaculture, according to the book’s website, “is a practical way to apply ecological design principles to food, housing, and energy systems; making growing fruits, vegetables, and livestock easier and more sustainable.”

The talk’s co-sponsors are the EARTH Center at Ohio State, the Chadwick Arboretum and Learning Gardens on our campus in Columbus, and the Ohio State Student Farmers Coalition.
