Buckeye fans now can pour official Ohio State Maple Syrup on their pancakes. It comes from the university’s Mansfield campus, where students and faculty with CFAES’ School of Environment and Natural Resources (SENR) planned and are running a nearly 20-acre sugarbush. A sugarbush is a maple tree forest used to produce maple syrup.

Ohio’s 2020 Day in the Woods series—which has gone virtual for now because of the coronavirus shutdown—kicks off on Friday, May 8, with the aptly titled “Keeping Yourself and Your Woodlands Healthy.”
Four, one-hour online sessions will cover spring migrant birds, the benefits of woodlands to your health, and management practices related to things such as tree seedlings, trails, and invasive species.

“It is with great sadness that the Ohio Forestry Association Foundation and the Camp Canopy Co-Directors have made the difficult decision to cancel Camp Canopy this coming June, due to concerns surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. Camp Canopy is held every year at FFA Camp Muskingum and was scheduled this year June 7-12.
“Rest assured that we are already planning for a great Camp Canopy week for 2021. In the meantime, keep watching our website and Facebook page for some exciting virtual events to take place the week of Camp (June 7–12)! These events will be free and catered to high school students.”
The Buckeyes take care of their buckeyes, and also their maples and oaks.
The Arbor Day Foundation has given Tree Campus USA honors to both the Ohio State Columbus campus and the CFAES Wooster campus. The recognition means that the campuses met core standards for keeping their trees healthy. Healthy trees in turn give benefits to people, air, and water.
Later this week, you can trade some green for an evergreen and help CFAES students when you do it.
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Forestry (DOF) recently honored Dave Apsley, natural resources specialist with CFAES’ OSU Extension outreach arm, for his outstanding contributions to forestry. In a “Forest of Honor” ceremony on Oct. 17 in Zaleski State Forest in southeast Ohio, trees were planted to recognize Apsley and two other honorees.
The series called “A Day in the Woods” concludes on Friday, Nov. 8, with “Identifying Trees in Winter.” Set for southeast Ohio’s Zaleski State Forest, the event will give tips on how to identify trees based on their bark, buds, twigs, nuts, and overall shape; will explore the forest’s Moonville Tunnel area; and, by visiting habitats ranging from wetlands to dry ridges, will showcase the diversity of Ohio’s Appalachian woods.
CFAES is helping sustain oak forests and the many kinds of life that need them. As a member of the Ohio Interagency Forestry Team, the college’s OSU Extension outreach arm is part of a collective effort to restore oak-dominated forests across 17 counties in southeast Ohio.
