See opportunities for conservation on Ohio’s farms

Register by noon Monday, Aug. 14, for the Environmental Professional Network’s (EPN) next monthly breakfast program, “Conservation on Farms: Tackling Issues, Seizing Opportunities,” which is from 7:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on Aug. 15.

The program will feature Mindy Bankey, CEO of the Ohio Federation of Soil and Water Conservation Districts, presenting “4R Nutrient Stewardship and Other Outreach by SWCDs and Partners”; and fourth-generation Madison County grain farmer Fred Yoder, a partner in Yoder Ag Services and past-president of the National Corn Growers Association, speaking on “My Philosophy, My Farm: From Community to Country.” Read the speakers’ bios.

Participants will meet at Ohio State’s Nationwide and Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center, 2201 Fred Taylor Drive, in Columbus, then will travel by bus to the Der Dutchman restaurant in Plain City for the program. There’s also an option to use your own transportation (limited to 10 vehicles).

Afterward, participants will tour Yoder’s farm at 7050 Butler Ave. in Plain City. The bus will return to the Ohio State campus by 12:10 p.m.

Good for farms and the environment

The program, says its description on EPN’s website, will look at opportunities in Ohio “for agricultural producers, often in partnership with those in urban areas, to provide a range of ecosystem services that enhance our environment and sustainability, and also help keep agriculture in all forms and scales economically prosperous.”

Registration, which includes breakfast, is $22 (transportation by bus) or $12 (driving on your own) and free for Ohio State students. Those interested in driving on their own should email EPN Coordinator David Hanselmann at hanselmann.3@osu.edu to register for that option.
