Columbus To-Do List

The list chosen: Ice Cream and Desserts

I have chosen this list because my roommates, fellow HES scholars, and I all really enjoy sweet treats! I hope to try a wide variety of delicacies and satiate my sweet tooth. By picking this list I will be able to try many different things like baked goods from Kittie’s Cakes, or custard from Whit’s Custard.

My first experience was at Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams with my roommates Eilidh, Maria, and Deepa(HES scholars). We actually visited this wonderful ice cream shop as a belated celebration for my 18th birthday! While at the shop, I ordered a scoop of Milkiest Chocolate and enjoyed it in a cup. I even learned/read how Jeni’s ice cream is made, what ingredients are included, and what makes it unique. Once I got my treat, I sat down inside the shop with my friends/roommates at a nice little table. We were able to eat and converse nicely in the warm, homey environment, as well as open my birthday gifts. Overall, it was a wonderful experience exploring a piece of Columbus and made my birthday a little more special. I can confidently say we will be returning to Jeni’s in the near future and I absolutely recommend that others visit and enjoy themselves.

My second Columbus experience was at Pattycake Bakery, a cute little vegan bakery also found on the Ice cream and Desserts list! The Pattycake bakery can be found on North High Street and serves a variety of vegan options for those with a love for desserts. Despite the fact I am by no means a vegan, I decided to try a vegan chocolate cupcake at the bakery and was pleasantly surprised by just how good it was.The cupcake was fantastic and maybe even better than deserts made with regular ingredients. The ingredients of the cupcake were also all natural and tasted quite healthy; It wasn’t too sugary or fattening but still perfect for satisfying that sweet tooth. I would recommend Pattycake bakery to everyone, regardless of if you’re a vegan or not. You’re guaranteed to enjoy the sweet and healthy treats, you won’t be able to taste the difference, and you’ll be satisfied with the friendly service available at the bakery. Not to mention the actual shop itself is quite adorable; It’s pretty tiny but decorated very cute and has nice little tables you can sit down at and enjoy your treats with friends, like my roommate and fellow HES scholar Deepa!

My third Columbus experience was with my second semester HES peer leader group. We selected a coffee cafe off the coffee&tea list, Kafe Kerouac. Kafe Kerouac is located on north high street in Columbus, and is conveniently less than 10 min away from Drackett Tower(where us HES scholars live). It is a cute coffee house/bar that can be perfect for hanging out with your friends, studying/working, poetry slams, comedy shows, playing board games, seeing beautiful artwork, and there’s even books and records for sale. The place was pretty busy when Eilidh, Steven, Kenny, Deepa, Lexie, Jared, and I stopped by. We were able to sit down and enjoy some treats, I ordered a sweet, hot chocolate and it was the perfect little pick me up. From the different, antique chairs to the old comics and fun decorations, Kafe Kerouac was certainly unique and different from other places i have experienced in Columbus. It was definitely refreshing and entertaining to hangout in such a fascinating environment. I would definitely recommend this coffee house to others, especially those looking for a nice hangout place. Additionally, i will be visiting again and it just might become a regular study spot!

ARTIFACT 1

In high school, one of my most defining attributes was my involvement with and commitment to the Lakota East Women’s Lacrosse team. I first heard of this wonderful sport through a close friend who was planning on trying out freshman year. I went out on a limb, along with my best friend, and tried out for the team as well. This was despite having no knowledge or experience of the sport. We both made it on to the JV team and I was thrilled to be a part of a school sport. Through lacrosse I have learned that determination and hard work can yield results you’d never think possible. I put in the time and effort every year, especially freshman year. By sophomore year I was improving as goalie and a varsity swing, with only a little over a year of experience under my belt. Determined to make full varsity, I trained harder and even worked over the summer. Junior year I gained the title of starting varsity goalie for my high school team; I had reached my goal. Despite gaining the position I had been working hard for, I continued to better myself. Senior year i was once again the starting varsity goalie and my stats were looking pretty great. I had made a new goal to make my last season at Lakota East Lax the best one yet, for me as an individual and in history. We all worked hard senior season, and my defense and I even made it to the #1 lacrosse defense in the state. Overall, our team made it to state and our ending record was the best record in our high school women’s lacrosse’s history. Lacrosse was a big part of my high school career and sports in general are a big part of who i am. Through my high school lacrosse community and team, I learned leadership, determination, how to deal with failures, teamwork and so much more. These lessons i have learned have shaped me into the individual i am now. Without lacrosse, I would’ve missed out on so many fantastic friendships/relationships, experiences, and a connection to my school and its community. I certainly miss playing with my old team and hearing “SAVE MADE! ROSHINIIII SUSARLAAAA!!” But, I’ll always be a Thunderhawk even if I’m no longer defending the Hawk’s Nest!

ARTIFACT 2

Since I’ve been in college, I’ve been working hard to stay involved and making sure the organizations i become a part of are ones that I am truly passionate about. Luckily this means I am able to keep up my involvement with lacrosse, through the OSU Women’s Lacrosse Club. Before I even got to college i knew i wanted to continue to play one of my favorite sports, but not intramural because i needed that competitive aspect. Once i gained knowledge of the club team, i showed up and practiced every Monday and Tuesday while getting to know the team. Then try outs soon followed and I was lucky enough to have made the team as a starting goalie, after working hard and proving myself. I am proud to be a part of this team and happy to be able to be their starting goalie. We had our first competition over fall break, even though it’s off season. We traveled down to North Carolina and dominated in the tournament. The experience was one of many traveling experiences to come if i continue playing on this team. And it is one of my favorite experiences since I’ve joined college; our time spent in North Carolina was a lot of fun and i really got to know my new teammates. Through OSU’S Women Lacrosse Club, I am able to continue my passion, destress from classes/have fun, stay in shape, and make lots of friends and memories. I am excited to see what’s to come with my involvement on this team!!

About Me

Hi, welcome! My name is Roshini Susarla (Row-shknee Sue-sar-la), or Rosh. I am a first-year undergraduate student majoring in Neuroscience with Pre-Medicine, and a member of the Humanitarian Engineering Scholars Program. With the knowledge and experiences I gain from The Ohio State University, I hope to get into medical school and obtain a doctorate. I would love to work in the field of Cardiology or Neurology and become an active member of Médecins Sans Frontières or Doctors without Borders. A little about me before I joined OSU: I came from Liberty Township, OH which is located close to Cincinnati, OH. I graduated with the class of 2017 from Lakota East High School which included close to 800 students, part of the reason why i was drawn to Ohio State. At Lakota East I was a highly involved Thunderhawk. For example: I was in the National Honor Society(Held an officer position-Treasurer), Medical Club of America(Held the vice president position), Latin club(took AP latin), Art club, Operation Hawks/Student Government(Officer), P.O.A.C.A(People of all cultures association), and played Varsity Lacrosse all four years as the starting goalie. Outside of school I was involved with volunteering, working, Tae Kwon Do, Demo Team(Elite TKD demonstration team), and piano lessons. Sports, music, friends, and school/future ambitions are certainly the most important aspects of my daily life. Because I love being involved and always have been, I plan to get involved in clubs on campus such as the Pre-Med club and IAA, tryout for the Women’s Lacrosse club, volunteer in and out of hospitals, grow through my scholars program, and participate in undergraduate research. I’m grateful to have gotten into this institution and i am excited to test my limits, reach my goals and make my mark at OSU. GO BUCKS!!

My Top 5 strengths:

1. Input(Strategic thinking)

As an individual with an input strength, I have a craving to know more and just can’t get enough of it. I enjoy collecting and archiving all kinds of information. This means I love to be mentally stimulated, as well as to read and learn about a wide range of interesting topics. My thirst for knowledge and understanding never truly goes away.

2. Learner(Strategic thinking)

As a learner I, again, have a great desire to gain knowledge and strive to always be improving.  The sheer process of learning and studying new ideas and topics can be quite exciting. This aspect of my personality makes me enjoy challenging myself and devoting time and energy into acquiring knowledge/skills that I feel I may lack.

3. Futuristic(Strategic thinking)

As a futuristic individual, I am inspired by the future and what could be. Often i ponder what i want to achieve further down the road and then i work to make those visions come true. Thinking about the future can fuel my ambitions and often gives me purpose.

4. Belief(Executing)

As an individual talented in belief, I have certain core values and I stand by them; my core values are unchanging. Some of these values include honesty, loyalty, trustworthiness, and selflessness. By standing by these beliefs I aim to make the world a better place than i found it and stay true to who i am.

5. Restorative(Executing)

As a restorative individual, I am able to figure out what is wrong and resolve it; a problem solver. Personally when I come across a problem or weakness of mine, I work hard and aim to conquer my shortcomings. Self improvement is important to me and I never stop bettering myself, always pushing to be the best version of myself i can be.
