In a few months…

Over the past few months a lot has changed in my life from learning to live in a tiny room with 3 other people, to figuring out how to get around such a big campus. I think one of the biggest changes however is dealing with new people and deciding who to get to know or study with. Back at home, I had a small but very close group of friends that I did everything with. When we graduated from high school, all of us went to different colleges across the state and have had to balance making new friends while still keeping in touch with each other. I’m so glad that we made a group chat a while back and all actually use it. I’ve heard so many stories of people going to college and completely forgetting about their old friends. I’m glad to say that on campus I’ve made a few good friends too and even a few online friends. Talking to people has never been one of my talents so making friends has never been easy, but I’m happy that the people I have met so far are really quite amazing. I can’t wait to continue meeting new people and keeping in touch with old friends as I go through the rest of my undergraduate experience.

Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness: Students cultivate and develop their appreciation for diversity and each individual’s unique differences.

During my time at OSU I plan on studying abroad to widen my view of the world and taking different classes about social diversity and other cultures. I am currently learning Japanese through the course provided on campus and have attended different events put on by the Office of Diversity and Inclusion.

Original Inquiry: Honors & Scholars students understand the research process by engaging in experiences ranging from in-class scholarly endeavors to creative inquiry projects to independent experiences with top researchers across campus and in the global community.

I plan on taking advanced courses during my four years in my majors and exploring creativity in other areas no necessarily within my major. I want to work with others  and on my own to complete research and help expand the global community of researchers. I also want to continue my experience with the liberal art and explore what OSU has to offer in music and art.

Academic Enrichment: Honors & Scholars students pursue academic excellence through rigorous curricular experiences beyond the university norm both in and out of the classroom.

I will use my academic plan as a guideline for my college career but not strictly follow it if things need to change. I am excited to start down the psychology and communications track now but also am looking forward to taking classes like music 3343 and philosophy 2455. I think the classes I have chosen for the future will put me in a good place to graduate with the degree I want but also make me happier as a person. I look forward to challenging myself as I go forward.

Leadership Development: Honors & Scholars students develop leadership skills that can be demonstrated in the classroom, in the community, in their co-curricular activities, and in their future roles in society.

I currently help an online community as an administrator, keeping the peace on the servers and such, but want to get more active in the Columbus community. The online community is great to help kids feel safe while they play games and enjoy the community. I hope to find a group which has a mission that I truly believe in and help them in anyway I can to help others.

Service Engagement: Honors & Scholars students commit to service to the community.

I would like to help students who deal with issues like stress, depression, and anxiety in the future. I want them to know that they aren’t alone in their struggles and help them learn different ways to deal with the issues as they come up.

Career

About Me

Hello, my name is Laurel Suppan. I am a first year majoring in Physics and Astrophysics, however, I am also very interested in music. In high school I played the marimba for my marching band and indoor drumline and sung in the symphonic choir as well as a mixed acapella group. I love science and math in general but the idea of how the universe works has away intrigued me more than anything.
