Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. G.O.A.L.S.

G.O.A.L.S.: Global Awareness, Original Inquiry, Academic Enrichment, Leadership Development, and Service Engagement

  • Global Awareness: I aspire to study abroad and/or travel to different countries to experience different cultures during my college years. I am particularly interested in traveling to Spain because I learned how to speak Spanish, and I am fascinated by Spanish culture.
  • Original Inquiry: I hope to find internship opportunities or in undergraduate research in order to learn more about real-world applications of engineering and law.
  • Academic Enrichment: I chose PSL as my scholars program because politics has always been of interest to me, however sometimes it takes me out of my comfort zone. Thus PSL challenges me as well as allows me to build on what I already know. I am in an engineering major, and PSL is nearly on the opposite spectrum of education, but I very am interested in government and law. I believe that being well-rounded is important for an individual, and I hope that PSL helps me achieve that and allows my interest for law and politics to flourish.
  • Leadership Development: I am a very outgoing person and have held leadership positions in the past. I can stimulate conversation in a group and break the silence during a pregnant pause. I want to be able to utilize my leadership skills by helping the community and serving as a good role model for others.
  • Service Engagement: I am passionate about community service, and I love helping others. I volunteered a lot for various causes in the past, and I want to continue helping others as much as possible during my years in college too. I joined BuckeyeThon this year, through which I plan to lend a hand to our pediatric cancer patients.

Career

Artifacts

I recently interviewed Cate Ziegler, my PSL mentor, to tell me more about herself.

Cate is from the Cleveland area, and she has a younger sister who is in her senior year of high school and TikTok famous (kind of) and dog that’s 12 years old. In her free time, she likes to hang out with friends, read, and go on runs near the campus area (she ran track in high school). Her favorite memory of OSU are game days because of the good energy, friends, and fun. Cate is part of the waterski club at OSU, loves lakes, and prefers the beach over city. We both share the common interests of traveling, going to national parks, and wanting to learn how to surf one day.

She initially wanted to go to law school which is why she chose PSL as her scholars program, but later realized her interests were more towards medicine. She is focused on studying functional medicine, which is a combination of conventional (modern/chemical treatment) and wholistic (herbal/natural treatment) medicine.

It was so fun to talk to Cate, and I’m glad we got to know each other a little bit better!
