Hi, my name is Sammy Sundell. I am from Olney, Maryland, about a six to seven hour drive to Columbus. My sister actually just graduated from Ohio State this past May, which is how I was introduced to the University. I live by the saying that everything happens for a reason and I believe that every experience proves valuable, whether it seems like it at first or not. I hope to branch out and make the most out of my college experience. I plan on pursuing a degree in a subject I am truly passionate about and I hope to do so with a suitable GPA.
I hope to study subjects in college that intrigue me and to gain knowledge on new topics. I strive to broaden my way of thinking and perceiving, and hope to interact with a diverse group of individuals. In high school I developed a passion for Psychology. I plan to continue practicing this passion by majoring in Psychology. I decided to do so after taking an Abnormal Psychology class at my local community college my senior year. The new information I learned had been more fascinating to me than any other subject I had studied before. First semester, I am enrolled in Data Anly in Psych, which is something I’m very excited to take.
Right now I am still very unsure as to what exactly I want to pursue as a career but I am intrigued by Criminal Profilers, Lawyers, and Psychologists. I believe that being in the Politics, Society, and Law Scholars program will help expose me to more fields that interest me and my passions. For four years I have worked as coach at a summer basketball camp. This job has taught me how to be in charge and take responsibility for multiple individuals. I have worked with little girls who have admired me right away and little boys who’s respect I had to earn. It has taught me how to deal with stress professionally and how to work hard at everything I do in life. I hope to make an impact on the world through my job, whether that be putting criminals behind bars or helping someone cope with mental illness.
I very much enjoy connecting with others through meaningful conversations. I think face to face interaction is pretty important considering that these days most interactions seem to be done through a screen. I have learned the value of connecting with others through various community service events I have participated in. Throughout high school, I participated in a club called Give to Live which did everything from raising money to support a boy in need from Spain, to giving toiletries to the homeless on the streets of DC, to serving food at a homeless shelter. Participating in such events has allowed me to see life from many different view points and to broaden the lifestyles I’ve been exposed to. I hope to get involved in community service activities here at Ohio State. One thing I am really passionate about is promoting better education for youths in regards to mental health. I believe that the topic is very much overlooked and almost deemed a forbidden subject. I strongly support the idea of mental health being portrayed as a more acceptable topic to discuss because I believe it would allow lives to be saved and happiness to be preserved. I hope to somehow advocate this idea during my time at Ohio State, and I am excited to figure out how to make that happen.
