Wow, time sure has flown by this semester!
Overall, this fall semester has gone by better than I could have imagined. I have made significant achievements in many different aspects of my life of which I am very proud of.
Knowing that I have a tendency to procrastinate, I made sure to start off this semester as strong as possible and began to work ahead in my classes as much as I could. I was able to get about two weeks ahead in every class and then maintained this status for the rest of the semester. It was a really good decision since it allowed me to relax for the rest of the semester and not worry about accidentally missing a deadline; I will make sure to employ this strategy for the future semesters.

Since I had some extra time on my hands due to working ahead, I made an effort to connect more to the community at OSU. It is a bit harder to connect with people since I commute, but I think I have done quite well socially. I became really great friends with another girl in HSS (hi Megan) and we have been hanging out a lot, exploring OSU and the local city. Thanks to HSS’s initiative, we volunteer in the innercity together for local food pantries and volunteer work has proved itself to be very rewarding. Megan and I also joined a club together, Bread Club, and made more great friends through that; it’s not the most academically impressive of clubs, but it is a wonderful way to destress, enjoy good company, eat (somewhat) healthy and delicious food, as well as a good conversation starter. I have also been able to connect with some people in each of my classes, which makes the academic days go by more enjoyably.

In addition to improving my social wellbeing, I spent a lot of time building my career network. I found a job working at a local lifestyle and wellness jewellery boutique called BOHINDI, and I have thoroughly enjoyed my time there. I have been able to develop my people skills as well as learn a lot about the behind-the-scenes business and administrative aspect to running a small business which I believe will be very useful for my future careers. In regards to Public Health related career advancements, I have recently joined the Ohio Public Health Association and I look forward into exploring what opportunities lie there.I have also had the opportunity to meet with the Director of the OSU Comprehensive Cancer Center James and Ohio State Wexner Medical Center’s Destination Medicine program. She was an inspiring woman who gave me a lot of great career advice and guidance that has made me even more excited to pursue a career in Public Health. Additionally, I was invited to sit in on a conference Destination Medicine had with the China Global Gateways team that discussed strategies for expanding OSUCCC — James medical outreach to Chinese hospitals and patients, possibilities for future medical collaborations between OSU and Chinese doctors and medical residents, and analysis of current projects and their efficiency. It was really interesting to get a glimpse of how collaborations in health are developed between foreign countries, and attending this conference further cemented my desire to work with healthcare in an international field. I also was able to make some connections of my own with some of the Chinese Gateway Ambassadors, which was really great!

Overall, this fall semester has went really well. I am really thankful of all of the opportunities that I have been given and I am excited to see where they will take me. In the future, I hope to expand upon my current experiences and add to them, consistently building a better version of myself. I am in love with my chosen major of Public Health55 and I am really glad that I joined HSS.
Can’t wait for the spring! 🙂
