Columbus Metro Parks: Part 2

One of the things I love about Columbus is how you can go from being downtown to the middle of a tranquil field or forest by driving no more than 15 minutes in any direction. Throughout medical school, residency, and fellowship at Ohio State, I have drawn so much of my wellness through time in nature, specifically our Metro Parks. We have more than 20 Metro Parks here in Central Ohio with free trails and activities accessible all year long.  My advice: Make the map below your checklist and see them all before you graduate from your program! Check out the link to find the park and activity right for you: https://www.metroparks.net/

Here are some of my favorites:

  1. Glacier Ridge Metro Park – This is hands down my favorite park. I thought first year of Gastroenterology fellowship would be a great time to start running half marathons (!?) so Glacier Ridge was my training grounds. Not only does it have miles of safe trails, but it also has a horse-back riding trail, dog park and new playground.
  2. Scioto Grove Despite living in Columbus most of my life, this park was new to me, and I am sure glad I discovered it. Not only can you hike its expansive and picturesque trails (#ForTheInstagram) but you can canoe and even participate in a free archery program sponsored by the Metro Park. It also has a beautiful venue space for retreats or receptions.
  3. Scioto AudobonThis Metro Park is one of the closest to OSUWMC. After work, I have been known to just run south until I make it to Scioto Audobon. It has a beautiful view of the Columbus skyline and is a great place for picnics with family and friends.
  4.  Highbanks – Throughout my training, many of the organizations with which I am involved including Women in Medicine, Humanism in Medicine and our Residency wellness retreats have been hosted here. Highbanks has beautiful trails, equally as fun to hike during the hot summer or snowy winter. There is a Nature Center in the heart of the park where you can learn more about the native wildlife #lifelonglearning

Numerous farm-to-table restaurants in the city emphasize using fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Establishments such as The Guild House and Alchemy highlight seasonal produce and inventive vegetarian dishes. Fine diners can even find completely vegetarian-focused, culturally inspired prix fixe options at locales like Veritas, Agni, and The Refectory. 1. Explore Ethnic Delights: Columbus is known for its diverse cultural heritage, and this is beautifully reflected in its culinary landscape. Head to The North Market (both Downtown and Bridge Park locations) where you can find a variety of international food stalls offering vegetarian options from around the world. From Indian curries at Flavors of India, to Mexican street food at Dos Hermanos, and Himalayan dumplings at Momo Ghar, there is something to satisfy every palate.

  1. Visit Veg-Friendly Restaurants: While Columbus has a growing number of exclusively vegetarian and vegan restaurants, many traditional establishments are also embracing the plant-based movement. Visit popular eateries like Brassica for customizable Mediterranean-inspired falafel bowls or Katalina’s for organic, local American brunch fare. Or check out Dirty Frank’s Hot Dog Palace, known for its extensive vegan hot dog options. Don’t forget to try Mikey’s Late Night Slice, which serves up delicious vegan pizza slices that even non-vegetarians rave about. Finally, the Bengali-American fusion café at Joya’s from Top Chef alum Avishar Barua brings new flavors to Columbus with its Kati roll and “Not Pad Thai” dishes.

  1. Enjoy Vibrant Farmers Markets: Columbus hosts a variety of farmers markets throughout the year, providing ample opportunities to indulge in fresh local produce. The North Market Farmers Market (currently under renovation) and the Clintonville and Worthington Farmers Markets are just a couple of examples. These markets offer a wide range of fruits, vegetables, herbs, and artisanal products, making it easy to find inspiration for your vegetarian meals. Engage with local farmers, sample delicious treats, and stock up on seasonal ingredients to create your own vegetarian masterpieces at home.

Columbus has become an exciting destination for vegetarian food lovers, offering a diverse range of options to suit every taste and preference. Whether you’re seeking farm-to-table cuisine, ethnic delights, or veg-friendly twists on classic dishes, you’ll not only enjoy delicious meals but also contribute to the growth of a vibrant vegetarian culture in Columbus.

Columbus Metro Parks Part 1

Are you are looking for something to do year-round that doesn’t require reservations, money, or really anything other than comfy clothes and shoes? Check out the amazing Metro parks system (metroparks.net) and other beautiful parks in our area!

I love to be outdoors when I’m not in clinic – it’s as good for my mental health as it is my physical health. Over the past two weeks I’ve visited The Park of Roses (parkofroses.org) (where I sniffed many fabulous roses) and Batelle Darby Creek (where one of my kids and I enjoyed a two mile hike, saw a herd of bison, and pet all sorts of local fish as well as pelts from local beasts), and another kid took a class to collect data on pollinators and where they are to track our pollinator populations in central Ohio. Everything was free, and no reservations were needed for anything other than the class. Programs for all ages include everything from aquatics to arts and crafts, earth and space, night hikes, photography, plants, and much more. When the kids were young I’d sign up for free classes to keep us all occupied and sane (IYKYK) and was grateful for the fabulous staff and interactive events in locations where we could spend a couple of hours exploring. I now enjoy going back to these spots with my teens and exploring in a whole new way!

Looking to meet new folks with similar interests? Looking for an interesting place to spend time with your friend/family/date/yourself? There’s archery, backpacking, biking, boating, canoeing, kayaking, cross country skiing, day camps, disc golf, fishing, fitness, golfing, horseback riding, ice skating, mountain biking, traditional and natural play areas, nature centers, nature preserves, obstacle courses, picnicking, rock climbing and sledding… all available through the Metro Parks website which is remarkably easy to navigate.

Bottom line, check it out. You won’t regret it 😊

Gluten Free Eating in C-Bus

I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease on my birthday two years ago. Bad timing, I know. I went from a clinic appointment (where I was diagnosed by my Gastroenterologist) to my birthday celebration with family. They had ordered all my favorites from the menu…unfortunately, all of them were also gluten-rich. With two years of gluten-free eating under my belt I’m happy to report this restaurant (Cap City Fine Diner) is still one of my faves as they’re very accommodating. In fact Cameron Mitchell Restaurants offer a ton of variety in their GF menus. Be sure to try out their restaurants and make sure you ask for the GF menu.

Of course, most restaurants (at least in Columbus) have a GF menu if you ask but today I’m going to highlight some truly Gluten Free restaurants with really great food.

Breakfast: My very favorite breakfast option is Bake Me Happy. I typically go to the location in Dublin North Market (6750 Longshore Drive, Dublin, 43017) because it is more convenient for my family. Don’t judge me, but my go-to order is a Donut Muffin. Ok – I might get two. It’s basically a cake donut with cinnamon and sugar coated all over it. Super moist. I know, it’s indulgent, sweet, and probably way too many calories for breakfast but it’s totally worth it for this gluten-free-carbohydrate-lover. My kids can’t tell there’s no gluten and either can my super skeptical husband.

Lunch: Preston’s is a spot that started in The North Market. After a couple of years, they opened a brick and mortar in Clintonville (2973 North High Street, Columbus 43202). Their menu includes pretty typical fare: burgers, fries, fried chicken but the magic is that it’s all GF.

The chicken is crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The burgers are juicy and can include fun toppings like Pastrami. And the biscuits, oh the biscuits. If you’re gluten free and biscuit lover – or if you’re a biscuit lover in general – go to Preston’s. It’s worth the trip.

Dinner: Greenhouse Canteen is such a unique experience, GF or not. Originally from Australia, Greenhouse Canteen markets themselves as “Sometimes naughty, mostly nice; forever plant based and gluten free”. Having dinner here is an awesome experience and I can’t recommend it enough. The Arancini Balls, Chickpea Fettuccine and Jackfruit Enchiladas are some of my favorites but I’m sure the rest of the menu is delectable as well (remember, I don’t venture out of my routine very often).

Dessert: If I’m invited to a potluck or asked to bring something to a party, dessert is my favorite. Especially now that I’ve found Bake Me Happy. I know what you’re thinking – you already talked about that place! But listen, it’s that good. And it deserves attention for both breakfast and dessert, I promise.

Some backstory on my personality – I am the kind of person who eats mostly the same foods, I’m not very adventurous. When I find my favorite ice cream, I don’t try other flavors, I just eat the same one on repeat. I typically order the same menu item from restaurants religiously. I am here to tell you that I am not a blondie fan. They’re dry, they’re dull, they lack flavor and I’d take a brownie over a blondie any day of the week. Except when I’m at Bake Me Happy. The blondie at BMH is phenomenal. Dare I say, the best blondie I’ve ever had. It’s an awesome combination of salty and sweet. My mouth is watering just writing about it.

Another fun fact about me – I don’t typically like cream-fillings. No cream puffs, no whipped cream, no marshmallow fluff. I know I sound very dull, but I just don’t like that creamy texture in my desserts. The only exception to my no-cream-filling rule is the Oatmeal Cream Cloud from BMH. It’s what dreams are made of – the name couldn’t be more appropriate.
