G.O.A.L.S

I hope to become very aware of global issues and aim to understand different cultures during my time at Ohio State. A way I plan on pursuing this is through my involvement in both PSA (Filipino Student Association) as well as iBELIEVE University as these two organizations will allow me to become aware of and interact with students of different cultural backgrounds.

An example of original inquiry that I will personally be pursuing is through creative endeavors that I have yet to iron out through STEP. I plan on using the funds from STEP to pursue an experience that will allow me to gain further real-world experience with my major, Computer Science Engineering.

On the academic side, I plan on continuing pursuing Computer Science Engineering as a major with a minor in Leadership Studies. I have chosen this coursework as I strive to one day create my own company, I feel that CSE will give me the technical background to do so while my minor in Leadership Studies will allow me to lead the company in a way that is not only effective but positive and allows everyone involved to grow.

I have been passionate about my own and others leadership development since high school and since coming to Ohio State this has not changed at all. I plan on continuing to grow as a leader by continuing to pursue a minor in Leadership Studies while also pursuing actual leadership experience through the organizations I am involved with. I have already gained great experience from my freshmen year when I was Bowen House Activities Council President, a Mount Leadership Society Mount Legacy Week Captain, the First Place Scholarship Recipient of the Courageous Leadership Initiative while also partaking in the Innovation and Leadership course where I got to work with Smart Columbus and other Ohio State Leaders.

Through my involvement within the Mount Leadership Society Scholars program, I am currently serving at ETSS (Ethiopian Tewahedo Social Services) where I have already completed over 30 hours of service this past semester. I have not yet determined where I will be completing my Year of Service but do plan on completing 75 hours of service for the year.

Artifact #2

For my second artifact, I have chosen this photo of my family which I actually have printed versions pinned on my cork board on my desk and taped on the inside of my daily planner as well as a digital version as one of my many laptop screen backdrops.

I have chosen this picture because of the people in it, my family. Over this past year, I have had a renewed appreciation for my family as I have only now fully realized not only how much my family cares about me and my success but also how much my family has done and sacrificed to put me in the position I am in today.More than anything, in this life I want to make my family proud in a way that makes them feel like all of the work they have put in and sacrifices they have made for me were worth it.

I chose to put this picture in my notebook, on my desk, and on my computer to serve as a reminder to always work harder as they are the reason why I work hard and push myself to become the best version of myself.

Artifact #1: My Camera

My first artifact is my Nikon D3200 Camera that I was lucky enough to receive as a Christmas gift this past year.

Since receiving it, I’ve made a point of having it almost everywhere I go in hopes of being able to capture moments that I would want to last longer than the single moment that they are. While it is incredibly cliche, having this camera serves a daily reminder the value of small moments and how fleeting life and emotion can be. It reminds me that the world and people are ever changing, and that while many memories are worth holding on to and many memories are ones that I am so glad that I will have forever because of the picture I took, it also serves as a reminder that truly nothing in our lives is constant. It reminds me that to be happy in a world that is ever changing, I must not only be okay with change but accept and welcome it and the challenges it brings into my life.

The moments that I capture are ones that should remind me of love and happiness and beauty but these moments are simply that: Moments. Not something that I should spend my entire life treasuring and looking back on but reminders of what I love in this life and using that motivation to find that love and happiness and beauty in my future and everyday life.

About Me

Having just graduated from William Mason High School in May 2016 Alec hopes to build upon the many passions and interests he discovered in his high school career at Ohio State. The most prominent of Alec’s interests would be his passion for leadership and service, which he expressed through involvement in Mason’s Student Government. Through his involvement in StuGo, he gained many opportunities with the most prominent being a staff member for The Ohio Association of Student Councils (OASC) and The iBELIEVE Foundation. Alec hopes to continue to use the skills he learned in high school, from attending the very same summer workshops he now staffs for OASC and iBELIEVE, through continued involvement in leadership and service as a Mount Leadership Society Scholar. Alec is currently pursuing these interests through a number of activities he is involved in on campus such as being a member of the Mount Leadership Society Leadership Training Committee, serving as President of the Bowen House Activities Council while also being an intern for The iBELIEVE Foundation.
