Informational Interview

  1. When and why did you choose this major?

  2. Did you start in this major? If so, did you ever question your decision?

  3. What was your favorite major course, and why?

  4. What was your favorite course outside of your major, and why?

  5. What kinds of extracurricular experiences (research, internships, co-ops, student organizations, study abroad, etc) have you had? Why did you choose those particular opportunities? How have they benefited you?

I interviewed Katie Lemon, a senior at The Ohio State University. She is an Integrated Language Arts/ English Education major. She chose this major in the first semester of her freshman year. She had already been leaning toward the major and her decision was solidified when the college came in to speak at a EXP lecture. She did not start in the major, but did apply to the College of Education and never questioned her decision. Her favorite major courses were School and Society and Adolescent Literature, where she learned about different pieces of literature and why they are taught in schools. She liked these courses because she got along well with her instructors and she liked the material. Her favorite course that was taught outside of her major was U.S. Latina Writers because she liked incorporating women’s studies in literature. In terms of extracurricular experiences, Katie was involved in a research project with homeless mothers, she was a Program Coordinator for ALP American language, and she had an internship with the English Conversation Program. Also, Katie got to travel to Montpelier, France for a teaching internship her sophomore year. She chose to become active in these opportunities because she had previous volunteered and liked it so much that she came back. With the internship, Katie wanted the chance to go abroad and said that it was one of her favorite parts of OSU. She gained valuable learning experiences and was able to interact with a variety of people during these extracurricular experiences.

  1. How did you find this interviewee, and why did you choose to interview this person?

  2. How has this interview influenced your major and/or career exploration?

  3. Did you learn anything unexpected from the interview? If so, what? If not, which ideas did the interview reinforce?

  4. What do you feel you still need to learn about this major/career before being able to make a confident decision?

  5. Which major exploration tools/activities/resources that you utilized this semester were most helpful to you and why?

I found Katie Lemon through the Senior Bank. I chose to interview her because she is an Integrated Language Arts/ English Education major and I am strongly considering studying that. This interview reinforced many things that I had already thought about teaching. For example, she came in thinking she wanted to teach high school kids, but decided middle school kids were a better fit for her. After the interview, I think that this is still a strong possibility for me, but I still want to keep my options open. I did learn some unexpected things from the interview. Katie thought that middle school kids were more fun to work with because they were more eager to learn. I had thought that I wanted to teach at the high school level, but she made me reconsider. Before making any decisions, I still need to know what my options are for minors. I would like to double major, but if I can’t do that I would like to have a minor. My favorite major exploration tools that were used this semester were the majors listed by personality traits and the list of minors. I found both of these things to be very helpful because I had access to a lot of information in one place and things were narrowed down into smaller groups.
