The Perry Initiative

On Saturday November 4,2017, I got to participate in a seminar at Nationwide Children’s Hospital about women in orthopedic surgery. The night before, myself and some others were privileged to attend a dinner at one of the presenter’s house among attendants, fellows, residents, medical school students, and other undergraduates. The seminar consisted of hearing lectures from some if of the attendants, a hands-on workshop working with femurs and placing external fixtures, and then a panel from the attendants and residents together to answer questions from the medical students as well as the undergraduates. It was absolutely incredible to work with people at every step of a process that I myself hope to complete. Their advice and encouragement was invaluable, and their passion and dedication to what they do everyday only inspired me to go after it even harder. I am very grateful I was able to attend such a seminar and to be able to work so closely with these amazing women. It was truly a memorable experience and one that I hope to keep in mind throughout my undergraduate years and reflect on when the road seems to be too impossibly long and hard.

Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness – I would love to study abroad at some point during my undergraduate time here at Ohio State. I have dreams of going to London or Rome and seeing the day to day things of another part of the world. One of the things I’d really like to gain from this category is an expanded idea of the ripple effect, or if I do this, this may happen. I want to look for the connections between all things, people, ideas, and experiences. Studying abroad is a great way to expand this horizon.

Original Inquiry – I would love to become involved in research here at the University, preferably of the biological or psychological category.

Academic Enrichment – This category shall be defined by a rigorous course schedule, one that is both challenging and enriching and will make me a well-rounded individual upon completion with a specialty in my field, but not a stranger to other areas.

Leadership Development – To fulfill this category, I will join some clubs, look for ways to be a mentor to another and provide guidance in the ways that I can. I won’t just do it to do it, but rather hope I can promote something because I’m excited and passionate about it, whatever it may be.

Service Engagement – This category clearly spells out giving back. As individuals, we have to become engaged, learning to live for others rather than just ourselves. This will expand horizons in way that almost nothing else can.

Career

[“Career” is where you can collect information about your experiences and skills that will apply to your future career.  Like your resume, this is information that will evolve over time and should be continually updated.   For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. Artifacts

[Artifacts are the items you consider to be representative of your academic interests and achievements. For each entry, include both an artifact and a detailed annotation.  An annotation is a reflective description of the artifact that attempts to communicate its significance.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. About Me

Hi, my name is Audra. I am currently a first year undergraduate here at Ohio State. I am a biology major, something that I decided upon during my freshman year of high school when I took my first honors bio course. I fell in love with the subject and it has yet to fail to captivate my interest or fascinate me. If I could meet anyone past or present, I’d pick Charles Darwin (although Gregor Mendell is a close second).  I am also on the premed track with the hope to attend medical school after undergraduate school. One of the things I value is looking at things from a new perspective and approaching topics from new directions. Another thing that I value closely is relationships and interactions with other people. Medicine is continuously on the forefront of the modern scientific world with the primary goal to attack problems of the human from a new angle, all the while with the intention to better the life of every individual it comes into contact A career in medicine would allow me to work directly with patients and families and to see the results of my work in the form of humanistic rewards, which I would arguably say are some of the most important we can have. I would also get to be a part of that forefront that captivates me so much.
