Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
FERPA is a federal law designed to protect the privacy of students’ education records. Education records include any information or documentation that is recorded in any way, including records produced by handwriting, computer, e-mail, audio, and video, among others. Educational records contain information directly related to a student and are maintained by Ohio State or any party acting on its behalf. More details on FERPA are available at registrar.osu.edu under the policies tab.
The FERPA law also applies to the student financial records. In accordance with FERPA, student’s permission is required in order to release fee account information. Does your student want to file a FERPA release form so that you can ask specific questions about his/her financial aid or academic standing? If so, students can log into their Student Center and under the PERSONAL INFORMATION heading they would select “Student Information Release.” They would select the “ACADEMIC INFORMATION RELEASE” (or click all that apply).
