The Code of Student Conduct – Amnesty
The Code of Student Conduct contains an amnesty provision. This provision gives the university discretion to forgo formal conduct proceedings for students who request assistance for others in need and for the person receiving assistance.
The university can also extend amnesty to students who demonstrate care and compassion by reporting harmful activities. It is important to note that though amnesty can be granted by the university, the university and university employees may still be required by law to report certain behavior to law enforcement, such as hazing in alignment with Ohio’s anti-hazing law—Collin’s law.
While amnesty prevents any formal university conduct action from moving forward, the university may proceed with informal resolution options, such as educational conversations and directives regarding available supportive and educational resources. No reportable disciplinary record will result from informal resolutions.
The Code’s amnesty provision applies only to student disciplinary action under the Code of Student Conduct.
It is critical to be aware of the immediate actions necessary when someone is experiencing an overdose from drugs. Please consult information from the Student Wellness Center, The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and the Ohio Department of Health – Project Dawn.
