Emerging Interests: The Common Core Math Standards

During this school year that is ending (2012-2013), Columbus City Schools (see http://www.ccsoh.us/commoncore5526.aspx) will have fully implemented the Common Core Math Standards (see http://www.corestandards.org/).common core web shot

In my work in the schools as an involved parent and parent consultant, I am noticing some stress around the implementation of these standards–Math in particular. As a parent of a late elementary student, I’m also feeling the crunch at homework time in my house. This year, I have noticed more arguments between my son and me about the “right” way to solve a math problem. He says my way is “old” and doesn’t work, but for me, my way is simpler than what he is being shown by his teacher. My solution is to just run up to the school before work and ask his teacher to help us. I have a flexible work schedule and can take advantage of this option. What about the parents that don’t?

I have been hearing (and reading) a lot about teachers and administrators with regard to these new standards that have been adopted by around 45 states at the time I am writing this. What are parents saying? What does the research say about how these new standards may be affecting parents’ ability to support their students academically? I did a cursory search of the literature and didn’t find very much publish research on this issue.

This heightened number of math-related arguments in my home has given way to some interesting questions that are just begging for a research study to address them…

How prepared are parents to assist their children with Math homework based on the Common Core Standards? What types of parental supports are provided by schools? If support is provided, how likely are parents to take advantage of this support? How aware are teachers about the struggles some parents may face? How prepared are teachers to help parents understand how to support their kids?

These are just a few questions that are begging for a research study…just begging. What questions  and concerns do you have about these issues? Do share!
