Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. G.O.A.L.S.

The first part of goals is global awareness. To achieve better global awareness, I hope to study abroad a few different times, in different types of countries. I would like to do this through course work, volunteering projects, and the undergraduate chapter of Doctors Without Borders that is here. This will allow me to understand the world that I live in better, and open my eyes to what needs to be changed. On a smaller level, the people I meet along the way will show me that each person is unique and precious.

The O in goals stands for original inquiry. In order to achieve this, I would like to work in a research lab. I believe that the processes used in a research lab will be infinitely valuable to my education and overall learning experience here. It will teach me to ask my own questions and come up with my own answers.

Next is A, which stands for academic enrichment. The major that I am in, neuroscience, sets me up perfectly to achieve my future goals. This major combines the science that I will need to get into medical school with the psychology that I am endlessly intrigued by, to create a major that is perfectly tailored to my ideal future career. Becoming a psychiatrist is not going to be an easy or a short process, but I believe that the neuroscience major, and the courses it presents, puts me on the correct track. I get to take classes that I am both interested in and challenged by to set me up for a successful future.

The L in goals stands for leadership development, which I believe to be a big part of what I find important. Currently, I do not hold any leadership positions, but I am hoping to achieve many throughout my time here. Firstly, I would like to be an ambassador within the neuroscience program, helping Dr. Campbell tell others about the program and run different events. Secondly, I would like to become a future leader of the clubs I am involved in, namely Undergraduate Neuroscience Outreach Organization and Minds Matter. Both of these correlate strongly with my career goal, as they teach us how to better understand and help people with mental illnesses. They are preparing me for future leadership because I am learning how to help others better.

Lastly, the S stands for service engagement. Currently, I am hoping to volunteer long term in two different settings: one in a hospital, and the other an orphanage. This past summer, I volunteered at an orphanage in Guatemala, and it was truly eye opening. The children there taught me so many valuable lessons about life, and I was able to provide them with a person who will regularly be around them. While in a hospital, I hope to both help people and gain knowledge as to how hospitals operate. Largely, I hope for all of my volunteer projects to be ones in which I help others in different ways.

Artifacts

[Artifacts are the items you consider to be representative of your academic interests and achievements. For each entry, include both an artifact and a detailed annotation.  An annotation includes both a description of the artifact and a reflection on why it is important to you, what you learned, and what it means for your next steps.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. About Me

I am currently majoring in Neuroscience, and I am trying to decide between a pre-med or pre-law track. I enjoy being outside, mainly hiking, swimming, hammocking, and exploring. I am unsure as to what I want to be when I am older, as I am passionate about a lot of things. However, I know that what I want to do is something that works towards helping people and allowing them to have a better life.
