Substance use disorders (SUDs), which can involve illicit drugs, prescription drugs, or alcohol, are common and result in substantial morbidity and mortality worldwide and in the US, and Ohio is among the states with the highest rates of SUDs. Despite the burden of illness and recommendations to screen and provide evidence-based interventions for SUDs, relatively few people who visit primary care providers are asked about substances or ever discuss it with a health professional. The STop UNhealthy (STUN) Substance Use Now Trial (STUN II) is a multisite trial aiming to evaluate the comparative effectiveness of strategies for improving the implementation of screening and interventions for SUDs in primary care.

STUN II is a collaborative effort between The Ohio State University, Bon Secours Mercy Health (through the Healthy State Alliance), and the Ohio Association of Community Health Centers (through the Ohio Primary Care Innovation Network, OPCIN). Funding for the work was provided by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ).
