Learning Technologies

Three organizational learning technologies I have utilized to organize my studying schedule are: Study Scheduler, Trello, and Anki. Below I will highlight how I have been using the three technologies, and what I think to be some advantages and disadvantages.

Study Scheduler

Study Scheduler is an app I recently downloaded that allows for me to input my specific study schedule into a calendar, and the app notifies me when I should be studying that material. Along with putting my schedule into this calendar, it also has me answer specific questions to assess the quality of studying. Such questions include the type of environment I am studying in or what type of studying I am doing.

Advantages:

  • Sends a notification to your phone to remind you to study
  • Easily accessible on your phone
  • Easily can build study blocks into the calendar

Disadvantages:

  • It is easy to ignore the notifications if you do not want to study
  • At times the questions the app asks can be a little extensive
  • There are no reminder notifications to let you know you have an upcoming study block

Trello

Trello is an online platform that helps you organize all of your tasks. It allows you to build tasks, set deadlines and reminders, and organize it so it is most beneficial for you.

Advantages:

  • Super clear layout to see all of your assigned tasks
  • It is really easy to break up my large assignments into smaller tasks and then visually see them on the platform
  • There is a compatible app, so you can see your tasks right from your phone

Disadvantages:

  • It takes time to write out and organize my tasks, whereas my hard bound calendar already has a template for organizing, so it takes less time to fill in my tasks.

Anki

Anki is an online flashcard system that allows for you to build your own flash cards, and then it uses a specific algorithm which helps you study the flash cards the most efficiently. This is done by quizzing you on the flashcards you know the least, the most often, and then showing you the flashcards you know the best, the least often.

Advantages:

  • The flashcards quiz you in a way that most effectively helps you learn the material
  • You can make different types of flashcards such as typical front and back cards, or you can make “cloze” note cards that hide certain words on the card to help you remember more specific points. See below an example of a “cloze” note.

Disadvantages:

  • It is difficult to go through the flashcards without following the specific algorithm, so if you want to review them all at one time it is not very user friendly
  • The app for this flashcard platform costs money, whereas the desktop version is free
