My STEP signature project was a study abroad program in London through Arcadia University from May 13thto July 5th. During this time, I took two classes: Contemporary Photography Practice and Feature and Travel Writing. These courses allowed me to explore storytelling and creative expression through both visual and written mediums while immersing myself in the vibrant culture and artistic scene of London, England.
Participating in this study abroad program enhanced my understanding of both myself and the world around me. I gained an appreciation towards stepping out of my comfort zone and immersing myself in new environments which allowed me to gain a deeper perspective on different cultures and ways of life. This experience challenged my assumptions and biases towards the world, allowing me to leave more open-minded and appreciative of differences. Through my courses, I learned to see the world in a more inquisitive and creative way, as I challenged different forms of expression and storytelling.
The people and experiences that I had abroad were essential to the changes that I felt through having this experience. Firstly, the Contemporary Photography Practice course pushed me to explore London through the eyes of a photographer. I spent countless hours wandering through the city’s streets, interacting with others, and pushing myself to make the most of every second I had in London. I was able to expand on my technical skills as a photographer while also becoming more observant and appreciative to the beauty of what was around me that can get lost in the busyness of life.
In my Feature and Travel Writing class, I had the opportunity to visit museums, immersive experiences, events, and interview locals as I learned to report on my experiences as an American living in London. Engaging in London and pushing myself to participate in experiences that enhanced the essence of locals, I was able to open my eyes to different viewpoints, stories, and understanding of culture and history.
The relationships I built during this time were invaluable. Collaborating with classmates on projects and in shared experiences enriched the community and our mutual learning. These interactions with fellow Buckeyes and students from universities around the country allowed me to utilize teamwork and utilize our own diversity of backgrounds and beliefs towards our creative endeavors.
Additionally, Arcadia University organized various activities and excursions such as museum visits, theatre outings, historical tours, and local spotlights which allowed us to explore London’s vibrancy of culture through both a tourist and local’s perspective. These experiences exemplified the importance of cultural immersion towards learning and personal growth.
This transformation is significant for several reasons. Academically, it enhanced my creative and analytical skills which are essential for my future studies and career aspirations. Personally, it made me more adaptable, confident, and empathetic which are crucial qualities for my personal growth and building meaningful relationships.
Professionally, this experience enriched my ability to convey stories effectively through both visual and written mediums. While my plans are to attend dental school to become a dentist, the skills and perspectives I gained are highly relevant to my future success. The creativity and attention to detail honed through both photography and journalism are invaluable to the field of dentistry, where precision and patient communication are highly important. Additionally, the empathy and cultural awareness developed during my time in London will enhance my ability to connect with patients from diverse backgrounds which will create a more inclusive and compassionate practice. Ultimately, this experience abroad has equipped me for future challenges in my personal and professional life by broadening my understanding of the world and the people within it.
