Hi everyone! My name is Melanie Steinberger, and I am extremely excited and privileged to be a member of Health Science Scholars this year! I am from Strongsville, Ohio, a small town just 20 minutes outside of Cleveland. I am the oldest of 6 kids and a first generation college student! I am undecided in my major for now as I originally was a nursing major before I decided to switch to the Pre-Medicine track. Ohio State was my dream school, and I am extremely excited to be here! It has been a dream of mine since I was young to become a cardio-thoracic surgeon and open my own private practice. I dream to be able to change lives in my own unique way, by caring for patients and seeing their cases through to the end. I am an avid sports fan and I love to play soccer and volleyball, but my favorite sports are Olympic weightlifting and CrossFit. I love challenging, long workouts and heavy weights, and I fell in love with both of these sports 2 years ago and I haven’t stopped since. My future dream is to compete in a weightlifting competition and go to nationals, which is why I joined the Ohio State powerlifting club this year. This year, I am ready to take on any challenge that comes my way. I feel prepared and ready for this semester!
Year in Review
This year has definitely been one of the most mentally and physically challenging years I have ever experienced. I moved to Ohio State in August with hopes filled to the brim. I had high expectations and I was extremely excited to leave my small town and enter a big city. I was humbled immediately by my challenging classes, difficult workload, and identity and career crises. I faced many hardships and challenges that I am so thankful to have pushed through. I have an amazing support system of friends and family members that never let me down. I stayed in the gym, competed at Collegiate Nationals for powerlifting, kept my grades up, kept a part time job, applied for an EKG program that will give me valuable clinical experience for medical school, and surrounded myself with amazing friends. This year has been very tough, and I am extremely hopeful that next year will be a better one.
I learned that I am unable to handle more than one difficult “weed-out” class at a time. I cannot do well in both chemistry and biology and math courses taken at the same time. I need to take only one hard class per semester to be able to achieve the highest grade possible. I have the same goal of attending medical school, but I have been exploring other options, as I am still not sure if medical school and the doctor lifestyle is for me. I am trying to work through impostor syndrome and career doubts and learning to have enough confidence and faith in myself to be able to achieve my best in life. This summer, I plan to take an EKG training program that is 5 weeks in length, to be able to work in a hospital and earn clinical experience. In addition, I am taking a calculus course to transfer to Ohio State. I will be returning to CrossFit and olympic lifting to keep myself in shape and have a hobby I really enjoy.

Artifacts
One artifact I consider to be representative of my academic interests would be my burgundy scrubs I am required to wear by my training program. These scrubs are important because they represent the hard work I put into becoming an EKG technician and working in an emergency room at a hospital. I chose to become an EKG technician not only for the clinical experience but to have a head start into the rigors of medical school and hospital life.
