G.O.A.L.S Statement

Global Awareness

As a chemistry major, much of my coursework will help me develop my understanding of the physical world, but not the global world. I have always had an interest in linguistics. I fully intend to further study linguistics to understand how there are commonalities to all human (communication) and valid differences in order to further my global awareness.

Original Inquiry

I am most excited about the research portion of my major. Since high school, I have always enjoyed labs. I participated in extracurriculars which allowed me to interact with lab more. Every staff member at Ohio State offers a unique lab which allow me to explore novel ideas and develop thoughts about my major. I intend to participate in lab research to develop an original inquiry into some aspect of chemistry.

Academic Enrichment

I came to college knowing what I wanted to study, chemistry, without a specific end career. I have many different interests, language, medicine, research, and more. So many different fields interest me even just within my major such as biochemistry rather than just chemistry, but physics has interested me as well, but the environment and green energy also interests me. I want to take rigorous courses which challenge me to understand all these different ideas to understand which one is truly for me. I plan for academic enrichment to guide me towards my career.

Leadership Development

Currently, I am not too involved with any clubs because I’m still not entirely sure what I want to join. I’ve attended several meetings for different clubs such as EPSA and Blood Club. EPSA is a pre-professional club dealing with the environment and different ways of interacting with policy while Blood Club has taken the place of the American Red Cross Club. Next steps for me would include further engaging in these clubs and seeing which ones I really want to commit to. From there, I would like for my passion in the club to guide me to where I need to be. I intend for my involvement and passion for an issue to develop my leadership.

Service Engagement

Giving back to the community is extremely valuable to me. As I mentioned before, I’m interested in many different things. I want to make sure that I’m taking advantage of all things to help me understand what I want to do with my life. I plan to volunteer at the Wexner Medical Center to both help me understand if the clinical field is an environment in which I would want to work and to give back to the community which helps me daily.

Hello, my name is Riley Stein. I am currently a freshman majoring in Chemistry. However, I have a wide variety of other interests such as linguistics. I am not entirely sure of what I want to do after school, but I think that being open to possibilities will lead me to the right path.
