The first semester at the Ohio State University has definitely been a life changing experience in only a short 16 weeks for me. I have seen all of the good, the bad, and the ugly, but the majority of my time here has been in the good. I plan to join more clubs semester which is something that I didn’t really do my first semester here, but also I would like to get an on-campus job next semester as well. I have also set some goals for myself to achieve throughout the next few years here at Ohio State. First, I would like to study abroad in Europe, mainly in France because I am also planning to minor in French. I plan on getting internships in my later years here as well to gain on job experience and to make me more of a standout applicant later in life. A lot of what I would like to do when I am out of college and on my own starts when I am here at Ohio State. This college gives me all of the opportunities in the world to achieve all of my goals possible and it makes it even easier when I am surrounded by my close friends here as well.
Columbus To Do List (Part 2 — Ice Cream and Desserts)
During this expedition of dessert and ice cream places around Columbus, even something as little and as simple as this makes new students feel more comfortable and adept to the new city, especially one like Columbus. From this project, I was able to adjust and find myself in this city as if I belong here and it was able to make me excited to spend the next four years of my life here. Whether I was walking down the streets in the afternoon seeing a variety of people walking their dogs, or whether it was during the evening, walking down High Street, seeing all of the things that the Short North and downtown has to offer me, it was clear that no matter what, no two experiences will ever be the same. Everything will always be different. There will be different people you see, different people you go with, and even different types of food that you get. The difference that I will experience every time I go to the Short North or find myself in downtown Columbus will never be a bad thing. The streets will become familiar, some stores will even serve as nodes in the city to me, and the city of Columbus itself will be like my new home, but being able to have a new interaction every time is something that is very hard to do that Columbus is able to capture with ease and give out to the students and families. Throughout the next four years, there will always be a familiarity in difference, something that I have never been able to experience of even fathom before, I have learned in the first few months.
The night I had Jeni’s Ice Cream was the same night after I went out to dinner with a few really good friends at Marcella’s. We walked down to Jeni’s where we were all able to get some dessert to end the night. Jeni’s is always a great spot to pick for some ice cream, but the one thing that still confuses me is that they never seem to have the basic flavors that everyone loves, unless you would want to buy a pint of it for $10-$15 which is ridiculous to me, but even with their unconventional flavors, I still find it a very good dessert shop.
Rocket Fizz, located in the Short North, to me personally is one of the weirdest stores I will ever be in, but at the same time it is also a 10 year old versions of me dream. They, much like Jeni’s Ice Cream, have the strangest flavors of candy and soda, and the names are even more bizarre it seems like. In the end of this experience, I am sure I will find myself back there sometime sooner rather than later.
Graeter’s Ice Cream is my second favorite kind of ice cream that I have had in my lifetime. Mitchell’s Ice Cream is my favorite which I get all the time back up in Cleveland. Recently, Cleveland also got a Graeter’s Ice Cream put in so when I saw that there was one near Columbus, I knew this would be a place I had to go to again. My favorite part about this, aside from the fact that they have my favorite type of ice cream flavor (black raspberry chocolate chip) has to be the chocolate dipped waffle cone, going above any of my expectations. I will definitely find myself here at least once a week once the spring time rolls around.
Columbus To Do List (Part 1 — Ice Cream and Desserts)
For these five different experiences, I decided to choose the topic on ice cream and desserts. I chose this topic because 1) ice cream and desserts and some things that I love, and 2) because this is probably the cheapest option that was on this list. I am excited to try all of the different desserts that the city of Columbus has to offer. Coming from Cleveland, we have some similar things, but also things that are only unique to Columbus, so my main goal is to either try things that I cannot get in Cleveland, or try places where I have never been before that Columbus and Cleveland both share. From this assignment, I hope that I can appreciate the culture that the Short North, High Street, and downtown Columbus can bring to Ohio State students.
My first experience happened on Thursday night–technically Friday morning–around 1:30 a.m. Me and a friend decided that we should go to Insomnia Cookies since it was close to our dorm and was one of the few places that were open during that time. I ended up getting a chocolate chip ice cream sandwich and was very confused on how to actually eat it. In the end, I will definitely find myself there again and would recommend Insomnia Cookies to anyone.
My next experience came on Monday after classes were let out. I walked down to the Short North and stopped in at Simply Rolled Ice Cream. It was a cool experience as to how they make something so simple, so unique. I think one of the greatest parts is that when I ordered the Oreo ice cream, they used the Halloween Oreo to be in the spirit, instead of the regular one. The result of Simply Rolled is the same of Insomnia Cookies: I will be back there sooner rather than later.
First Impressions of Ohio State – Noah Steele
My first impression of Ohio State brought more to my mind than I had expected. The campus was buzzing, students were eager to start a much anticipated school year, and I had already made friends in my Scholars program. Wiggling my way through the crowd of packed sardines, I found many clubs that I am interested in joining at the involvement fair. My first thought for classes however was not the same as the surrounding environment. Because I am in the Knowlton School of Architecture, I was getting ready to jump in and start building and designing things right away…I could not have been more wrong. Learning the basics is the first step, and just like its principle, everything starts from the ground up. I am looking forward to dive deeper into the architecture major and I cannot wait to see what else Ohio State has to offer me.
Noah Steele – About Me
I am entering Ohio State this year as a freshman studying architecture. Building and designing have always been things I have enjoyed doing since I was a kid, and sports have played a big role in my life as well. I plan do join several clubs in college and have already joined one this summer: SERVitecture. This past summer, SERVitecture took a trip to Toronto where it was partnered with Habitat for Humanity. Whether it was days spent working on the build site or walking around the streets of Toronto, the week long trip was a great and eye-opening experience for me and I cannot wait to see what more Ohio State has to offer.
