Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. G.O.A.L.S.

My G.O.A.L.S:

Global Awareness:

As a Political Science major, awareness of events that are happening worldwide is necessary. To further my knowledge on this matter, I am taking classes in Defense Policy, which more or less covers how the US should address potential threats to the safety of its citizens, be them from external nations, or from our military itself. I am also taking various history classes, for example, this semester I am taking a class on the “Small Wars” of colonizing nations following the American revolution. By learning more about how the occupation of these countries impacted their culture and their modern-day status as a nation, I can understand a the world with greater clarity.

Original Inquiry:

I am just a first year currently and as such I am not yet engaged in any research projects or internships, however, I do plan on obtaining an internship later in my college career.

Academic Enrichment:

I am involved in a few extra-curricular activities. I am a member of CRU, so I can further explore my relationship with God and my faith. I am also a member of Young Americans for Liberty, a student group looking to promote and raise awareness of the Liberty movement, and to help support local and national political candidates that share our views.

Leadership Development:

Through activities like CRU and Young Americans for Liberty, I can help hone my leadership and communication skills. Many second year-and-up students in CRU help lead bible studies at their dorms. If I choose to pursue that path, I will be able to get experience in speaking in front of a group, preparing what I am going to say, as well as organizing other events. Young Americans for Liberty also provides similar opportunities – I can serve as a campaign aide in local elections, take classes on how to run for political offices, and many other options that not only teach me how to work with others, but also gets me involved in the complicated scene of our nation’s politics.

Service Engagement:

Before I even arrived at Ohio State on my first day, I had received an email detailing a potential internship that I could apply to, that being the job of a legislative page. While I decided not to apply, as I didn’t want to fill my schedule too much especially on my first year, I plan on applying to that internship as early as my second year. Being able to help actual politicians that are in office will not only help me form connections with lawmakers, it will also help me contribute to the community through my services to the state.
