Reflection on the G.O.A.L.S.

How do you plan to work toward the goal of Global Awareness? (For example, consider course work related to global studies or diversity issues, study abroad, involvement in cultural organizations or activities, etc.)

To work toward the goal of Global Awareness, I plan to study abroad and/or become involved in a group that performs service in foreign countries. There is a program currently offered at Ohio State that allows students to study the history of biological roots in England and spend spring break in England visiting various sites pertaining to the material covered during the semester. This would be an amazing opportunity because the class is relevant to my major and allows me to travel abroad during spring break, meaning that it would not interfere with my other classes. It would also be incredible to be able to volunteer in another country with a student organization. I love volunteering and being able to do it overseas would be wonderful.

What do you plan to do to work toward the goal of Original Inquiry? (For example, consider research, creative productions or performances, advanced course work, etc.)

Original Inquiry is very important for a fulfilling and enriched undergraduate academic career. To fulfill this goal, I plan to become involved in research. I would love to do cancer research because multiple members of my family have suffered from this horrible disease. There is a lab on campus that is using hemoglobin to deliver cancer fighting drugs in leukemia. It would be amazing to be involved in something so innovative. I would love to be able to make a difference in someone’s life while I am still an undergraduate.

How will you use your Academic Plan (and eventually, your Honors Contract) to create a program of study that serves your academic and professional interests and needs? (Consider, for example, the following questions: Why did you choose the major(s) (and minor(s), if any) you chose? Which GE courses are you most excited about taking and why? How do your course selections demonstrate a commitment to developing a program that goes beyond minimum requirements?)

I created my academic plan so it is as fulfilling and diverse as possible. I chose my major, biology, because I am premed and the biology major has many requirements that line up with those of medical school. I love the idea of being able to heal someone who is injured or ill. While I do love biology and related subjects, the GE that I am most excited for is the study of classical mythology. I have loved mythology since I was a child and I can’t wait for the opportunity to study this subject. I also am excited for Abnormal Psychology because it includes the study of mental illnesses and I know many people who are impacted by them. My GE selections are very diverse, which shows that I have varied interests.

Involvement outside of the classroom is an important consideration as you plan your degree program and prepare for your career. Please identify opportunities with which you are currently involved or ones you would like to explore. (For example, consider involvement in student organizations, internships, work, community organizations, research, etc.)

Throughout high school I had many leadership positions and was involved in numerous clubs and organizations. There are several on campus groups that I plan to become involved with. One such group is the premed club. This would be an invaluable asset for me as I pursue medical school. Another group that I would like to join is Paws for OSU. I have always loved dogs and being able to help with service dogs aids both the animals and the humans who will benefit from them. In addition, I would love to join a group that performs service in other countries, especially if it is medical related service. I will aim for a leadership position in one of these groups, likely Paws for OSU or a group related to service.

Participation in service to the community helps students to build on their educational experiences and become valuable members of society. Please discuss service opportunities with which you are currently involved or identify opportunities you would like to explore.

Community service is very important, both to myself and the people that benefit from it. As mentioned above, I plan to join Paws for OSU and a group that engages in service projects in other countries. I have always been deeply involved in service and am excited to continue this passion in college. It would also be amazing to volunteer at the hospital, specifically the James Cancer Center. Since I am premed, volunteering at the hospital would allow me to fulfill my desire to serve and also gain valuable experience for the future.
