Peace Corps Informational Session with Laura Joseph

17 September 2020

The Peace Corps is definitely something that I have been interested in for a while and have been wanting to learn more about so this community meeting with Laura Joseph, the Ohio State Peace Corps recruiter was a wonderful opportunity for me. Laura started off the meeting by talking about some of the basics of the Peace Corps. Laura explained that members of the Peace Corps typically go away for two years and work in fields such as health, education, youth development, agriculture, environment, and community economic development. She told us that for your first three months in a new country, you will live with a host family and then get to decide if you would like to stay with your host family or live on your own. It was really beneficial to hear about Laura’s experience in the Peace Corps as well as other peoples that she has met. Laura also told us that Ohio State is 6th in the Nation for the number of Peace Corps alumni and that though the national average of people accepted to the Peace Corps is one in seven, Ohio State’s average is about one in three, which I found very interesting and exciting. Another thing I learned from Laura is that there are about 200 fellowships that the Peace Corps offers for Graduate School and that the organization has great job networking, making working for the Peace Corps even more attractive. After this community meeting, I decided that the Peace Corps is definitely something I want to look more into and possibly apply for before graduate school.
