Finding a New Major – Spring 2017

During the spring semester I knew that my current major was not feeling right, so I decided to meet with an Exploration advisor to weigh out my options. I constantly struggled to narrow my choices down because I genuinely love learning about new things. There were times throughout the semester that I convinced myself that I would never find a major that suited me, and I began to worry about graduating on time. Ohio State offers countless majors, which also made me feel overwhelmed at times. After several appointments with an advisor, I finally came across a major that covered everything I am passionate about: Latin American Studies. This experience taught me about being patient and I learned a lot about myself throughout the process. I believe that this experience will help me throughout my studies at Ohio State, and I think that majoring in something I truly love will allow me to have the confidence I need to find my dream career. http://clas.osu.edu/

First Year 2016 – 2017

My first year at Ohio State was a life changing experience. I met so many different people and made connections with some of the faculty. I joined a few clubs, one of which allowed me to volunteer with girls in middle school in the inner city of Columbus. My time in the International Affairs Scholars program taught me to see the world with a new perspective and I am excited to learn more next year. This year also challenged me. The new setting of a large college campus made me grow as a student and as a person. I found a new major that will make studying more enjoyable, and the experience of finding a new major made me get to know myself better. I hope next year I can meet even more people. Hopefully next fall I will start planning a study abroad trip to Spain or a country in Latin America. I also would like to join more clubs and find an internship at a local law firm in Columbus.

Mentoring with 1girl – Fall 2016

I have had the opportunity to volunteer at CCA Main with the group called 1girl. We mentor girls in middle school and do a variety of activities a few times a week. One of the things that we focus on as a group is leadership. Many of the activities that are presented involve the girls sharing their ideas on issues or practicing how to present in front of a group. We encourage the girls to be themselves and embrace being a strong, independent female. Being able to help girls find the confidence that they need is very rewarding and I hope to extend my volunteering into other organizations as well.

About Me

I am a first year student at the Ohio State University. My major is history and I plan to become a social studies teacher at the high school level. I would like to minor in Spanish and possibly French. I love to travel, and I would eventually like to volunteer abroad or join the Peace Corps.
