We try to meet regularly to practice speaking, but OSU is a big place, so it’s also nice to have a “home” on campus, where we can count on seeing cool people twice a week, including students from other countries, whose perspective is different from ours. We also try to help out the department with some of their events. Come check us out to see if this can be a good place for you, too.
See the events page to check out what’s going on! The following list of goals demonstrates our dedication towards these categories this year:
2021-2022 School Year:
———–
Education/Practice:
————
Many of us are in the club to practice our respective languages, so obviously we have a large focus on education towards mastering them. We would like to create immersion spaces where people can sit down and immerse themselves in Spanish, and/or Portuguese. All of our events; however, strongly encourage bilingualism.
————
Social:
————
We have a lot of social events for our members to get to know each other/practice their language skills. Club dinners (Sobremesas) and conversation tables are a few of the things that we’ve already been doing to build our community. In the future, we plan on holding larger-scale events such as a taste-of-OSU type event where people could try out various Hispanic foods, or we can coordinate an event with other student organizations.
————
Community Service:
————
Community service is very important to the Spanish and Portuguese Club. Some things that we are doing, or have done include interpreting for parents at a local school, participating in the Department of Spanish & Portuguese Día de los Muertos event and participating with the Reach Out and Read program at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. We are always looking for new ways that we can participate in assisting the Spanish-speaking community in Columbus, and in the future, we plan on getting involved in things like working with Big Brothers Big Sisters to mentor Spanish-speaking K-12 students, and working with Early Head Start in Columbus.
