Academic Enrichment:

In Biology 1113 the class is split into lecture and lab. Working with other people in the lab portion can be a great way to further understand the material. A portion of lab grade in this class is a poster project that is completed in each lab group. This group project asked students to take an in depth look at a disease. As well as looking at general information and how the disease acts, each group had to find how their chosen disease was relevant to class material. These posters were then shared with the class. This project allowed for connection of class material to applicable knowledge in the world outside the classroom.

PB and Jam

PB and Jam is an annual campus wide service project run by Starfish. Starfish is a service club on campus that is run through OSU’s Hillel. PB and Jam’s goal is to make as sandwiches as possible for homeless shelters around Columbus while also reaching as many different students as possible. This is done by reaching out to other campus clubs and organizations so that there is diversity in who is working together in the project. This year there were eight tables set up around campus with a  different club or organization running each one. Fraternities, sororities, clubs and a scholars program joined this year is helping feed the homeless community in Columbus.

My part in making sure this project ran smoothly was contacting the food banks and pantries to make sure there was a place to take all 1000 sandwiches at the end of the day. As well as contacting multiple food pantries around Columbus, I also helped make posters  and contact different organizations and clubs around campus that might have partnered with Starfish for PB and Jam.

This was a great experience and let me learn a lot about persistence and how to communication in places outside of my immediate contacts. Calling an organization multiple times is sometimes necessary and leaving voicemails with all of the necessary information can take practice.  PB and Jam this year was amazing, and I cant wait to do it again next year!

Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. Service Engagement:

Through the scholars program of ACES there is no shortage of service opportunities. One of these opportunities that has been my favorite that I feel truly fits into the engagement part of “service engagement” was an event put on for the ACES members where we were making felt blankets for Project Linus. During this small one hour event had around 40 people show up, which is well over half.  Each small team of two or three made about two blankets each. These blankets all go to people in need, and it was great to see everyone come together.

Career

[“Career” is where you can collect information about your experiences and skills that will apply to your future career.  Like your resume, this is information that will evolve over time and should be continually updated.   For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. ACES Movie Project

In ACES scholars program a survey class is required in the first semester. In this survey class we were tasked with watching a documentary with other members of the class and making a presentation to share with the rest of the class. This project alone is 30% of the final grade in the class.

The documentaries that we were allowed to choose from all dealt with heavy topics ranging from incarceration of minors for life to sexual assault and rape on college campuses. The group of four that I was in watched the movie ” The Hunting Ground”. This movie looked in depth at how college administrations deal, or do not deal, with sexual assault and rape on their campuses. It also showed the people who are fighting the way this system is set up all across the country. What the documentary showed was shocking to each one of us. The universities have financial incentive to hide and keep rape/sexual assaults quiet. It makes their universities look safer than they are.

Working in a team was a large part of this project. It was difficult to schedule with three other people, but we managed to meet and get all of the work done as well as practice once. The other ideals that this project taught was being able to present in front of our peers. This is a struggle many people face, and any opportunity to practice should be utilized. Over all this project was a good experience and emphasized many skills that are useful in the world outside of a learning environment as well as in a learning environment.

About Me

Hi, my name is Tali Spira. I am a Human nutrition: Pre-Dietetics major and also in the ACES (Advocates for Communities and Education Scholars). I grew up in Bexley, Ohio and went to Bexley High School. Throughout high school I was highly active in Swim Team, Religious Youth Groups, and Service. I became passionate about Food Justice and Food deserts through working with the Wexner Service Corps during my senior year. This passion has greatly influenced me in what I want to do with my life as well as which scholars programs I applied into at OSU. I have been fortunate to grow up in an affluent neighborhood with a great school district. I have cared greatly about school and learning for many years now, I was even accepted into the Cum Laude Society in my high school. I hope that at OSU gives me a good foundation for my career and direction in exactly what I want to do with it.
