G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness: To further broaden my knowledge on different cultures and the depths of diversity and all that it entails, I am currently enrolled in a Leadership and Service course for Morrill Scholars, where we break down and analyze the roots and effects of prominent topics, such as racial oppression, social injustices, service-learning, social change, etc. I am also currently volunteering at the RISE site of the Boys & Girls Club here in Columbus, providing service to the children that come there and to the staff. This has exposed me to many different cultures here within our community, and has taught me how to properly understand the needs of this community and how I can provide effective service towards those needs. I am also currently a part of the Act!ion Social Change club, where we break down racial and social stigmas and stereotypes within movies and have really interesting discussions about these things. To continue increase my knowledge, I plan to study abroad, so that I can be fully immersed in different cultures, and to find more service opportunities so that I can affect change within my community and other communities as well.

Original Inquiry: This semester, I have participated in a number of psychology studies, analyzed studies, and am even in the process of conducting my own study. These have allowed me to further explore and deeply research topics that I am extremely intrigued by. Next semester, I hope to work in a research lab so that I can be exposed to the ins and outs of running a formal study, and learn from extremely talented researchers so that I will be able to perform these tasks on my own one day.

Academic Enrichment: My goal has always been to challenge myself in whatever I do. In college, this means taking as many honors and advanced courses as I can. I find that these courses provide much more in-depth exploration of the topics covered in class, which makes them so much more interesting. My most rigorous course at the moment is CHEM 1910H, OSU’s honors general chemistry course. Though this has definitely been the most challenging and time-consuming course I have perhaps ever taken, I feel that my understanding of chemistry has reached a whole new level. In addition to this, I have learned new ways to study and proper lab technique, along with the development of relationships with my TA’s and professor.

Leadership Development: As a Morrill Scholar, I have chosen to be a part of the Leadership and Development group, along with taking the Leadership and service course. These have both provided me with the resources and training to become a more effective leader and implement these newly gained skills in group projects, class discussions, and especially with my service at the RISE Boys & Girls club. As for my future role in society, I plan to use my leadership skills to take initiative in my research and to actively work towards change within my community, rather than sitting idly.

Service Engagement: Service has always been a big part of my life. I have been on two big service trips, one to the Dominican Republic, where I helped to build houses in impoverished villages, and one to China, where I had to privilege of teaching english to children at an orphanage. Not only was I able to provide service to these communities, but I gained so much knowledge of the people and cultures there, because “service” goes both ways: those providing the service give and the community receiving the service gives back. Within my community at home, I have been able to volunteer at my church, where we host immigrant families, teaching them english and aiding in their integration into American culture. Also already mentioned, my service at the Boys & Girls club has become a big part of my life as well. I plan to find more ways where I can give back to not just my community, but any and all communities. As my interests lie in psychology, specifically mental illnesses in adolescents, I plan to find a way to provide service within this community this summer. There are very real struggles, tangible and intangible, within communities everywhere, and I have the ability to alleviate these in some way and help to push for change.
