Year in Review

Overall, this past semester has been a huge transition period, as I got used to living on my own. I have done very well academically, and the classes I was in were very inspiring for my future teaching career. For example, my African Studies class has allowed me to see how important it is to introduce a more diverse set of literature in the classroom. This semester I am starting FEEP, which will give me another opportunity to develop teaching skills. Life has changed a lot since high school but I am proud of where I have gotten and where I plan to go.

G.O.A.L.S.- Rebecca Spector

Currently, I am a member of several interesting clubs outside of Mount Leadership Society. I have joined Kappa Phi Kappa, which is the education frat on campus. Through them I participate in several different service and social projects as well as hear from experienced educators on how to prepare for my career. I am also a huge participant in GIVE, which has various service trips to other countries. I have been to Thailand, Laos, and Tanzania, learning more about hope, perseverance, and love on every trip. I hope to work with this organization after I graduate.

I plan to stay committed to these clubs as they bring great experience to my life and expand on my knowledge. Next year however, I am hoping to expand my horizons in the leadership aspect of school. My main goal is to become a campus ambassador, giving the me the chance to spread OSU opportunities to others, and show them why this is the place to be. Beyond this, I am considering applying for OUAB, which will give me experience working with outside contacts as a joint effort.

Through out everything, I will balance these extra-curricular’s with my major as I go into winter break applying for my major.

Career

Last spring, I was involved in FEEP, where I had the chance to work at Graham High School as an assistant English teacher. This was an amazing experience for me to develop teaching skills and be surrounding by a similar environment to my future career as a teacher. Not only am I interested in education, but further down the line I would like to form a nonprofit. Because of this, I am gaining experience through a summer internship with Boys and Girls Club of Columbus. I am very fortunate to have these opportunities and I am excited to see what comes next.

Artifacts

This year I joined Broom ball with my fellow Mounties. At first I was hesitant because it was late on a Sunday night but I am so glad I did not miss this opportunity. My whole life I have been in sports and when I think about it, all of them helped me improve academically as well. They give me a way to release my stress in a productive manner and wake me up both physically and mentally, ready to focus on school. Broom ball, while not the same sport as what I played at home, gives me a sense of familiarity and comfort.

About Me

My name is Rebecca Spector and I can’t wait to start school at Ohio State. I am going in as an English Education major and hope to earn a minor in Spanish. In the past, I’ve been a big participant in both figure skating and water polo, although I’ve decided not to further either in college. I plan to participate in as many clubs as I can handle, one of them being GIVE. This past summer I went on a service trip with GIVE to Tanzania, and have since then become an ambassador for the program. I am excited to be a leader for GIVE as well as find other ways to help Ohio State grow.
