Final Reflection

After taking this course, my knowledge of online resources and technology has just continuously grown and helped me in many positive ways. The online modules showed me a variety of tools to use throughout college for writing papers, doing research, organizing my notes, etc. I really enjoyed seeing how in depth searches can go on Google and learning to use the OSU Library website helped greatly as well. All college students should take this class just so it will broaden their horizon on what kind of resources are actually available for them.

Throughout this half of the semester, I have learned a lot about myself just from taking this class. It has made it clear that I am a thorough procrastinator and I really need to work on this issue. This course showed me multiple ways to manage my time and become organized. I most definitely need to take these ideas and process them into my daily schedule. Procrastinating is a terrible habit that I need to break. I am going to begin my planning out my time accordingly and not waiting till the last second to do everything. I know my life will be a lot less stressful if I do this.

My most meaningful experience in this course was definitely the module teaching me about note taking. The tips and resources provided made me realize that I was doing the note taking process all wrong. This lesson caused me notice that my notes from all my college course were just unorganized and unnecessary most of the time. The tips given to me helped me reevaluate and begin writing them in much more clear and concise ways. It helped me get all of the important stuff written down, rather than the unneeded and “waste of time and space” information.

I am extremely happy knowing I have taken this course yet still have at least two years left of my college career. The information taught is so resourceful and will be extremely helpful in my future years of hard work and stress. I will especially apply what was taught when it comes time to write papers and research. The online resources provided can reduce the time I would waste before doing unnecessary things. Resources such as Easybib.com and OWL at Purdue will come in handy when I have to cite sources for research. Also, another resource, which is ratemyprofessor.com will come in handy each semester before I schedule my classes. I can be much happier knowing I read other students and colleagues opinions of my future professors before facing them myself.

Overall, this class will definitely come in handy throughout my college years. The teacher was a great help in how the class was organized, set up, and presented. I am very happy I took it because my eyes have been opened to whole new set of possibilities and helpful techniques. Using technology is avid in today’s society so there is no way this class can not be helpful to any college student, or even a high school student! After taking this class, I will hopefully continue to use everything that was shown and taught to me.

Searching and Researching Online

As a college student, I can not express enough how Google and other search engines will become your best friend. When having to write papers, do projects, study for exams, etc. you will constantly need to be doing researching for a variety of topics. After completing module 6, I realized how many more resources there really are out there. When searching, make sure to use the main concise key words that you want to find results for. Then, filter those results by using all of the different resources through Google. Making yourself familiar with all of these resources is your first step though.

One piece of information that I would like to share with you is that I do not recommend using Wikipedia when doing research. Wikipedia can be edited by anyone so you never know if the information is one hundred percent reliable. Using it for basic information is usually alright, but I would NEVER base an entire paper on the information provided. Two resources that are prime when searching and researching in college is definitely University Libraries and Google Scholar. When searching for scholarly articles, books, citations, etc. then these two webpages can significantly help you. In college, I have personally used these resources so many times because most professors will require you to find books and reliable articles, but the best part is they usually contain the MLA or APA citations you will also need in the future. Overall, I just want to tell you that utilizing good resources for searching and researching online is extremely important and I hope this all helps!

Occupational Therapy Educational Video

Check this out:

This video is an informational one describing how Occupational Therapy is actually a job that helps and impacts peoples lives in a great way. It describes what an occupational therapist actually does every day at their job. It also shows how important their work is to the patients. Occupational Therapy is a hands on job that helps improve someone’s everyday life. This video helps show that by using actual individuals that are occupational therapists.

I have chosen to share this video because Occupational Therapy is what I plan to pursue after undergraduate graduation. People constantly ask “what does an occupational therapist do?” because it is so similar to a physical therapist. I feel that it is important to show people what these therapists actually do because their work is underestimated. This video definitely helps show me what exactly these intelligent people do in their job and how it helps others. The impact they make on other people’s lives is incredible to see.

Web-Enhanced Listening and Viewing Strategies

Hi everyone! Today I am going to talk about how important it truly is to utilize web-enhanced listening and viewing strategies. I cannot express enough how helpful it is to actual listen to a lecture or idea and take good notes, rather than just look at it. Yes, I know college students can get lazy and distracted in class, but taking clear and concise notes is important for when it comes time to study. It is easier to take good notes when you focus on what the teacher is lecturing about. It may be boring. It may be a topic you do not want to talk about. But notes and listening are a vital part in receiving a good grade in the class. There are some tricks to the trade though that can help you out. Some teachers may post their lectures online, so if this happens make sure to print them off before you go to class. It will make everything so much easier and you will not miss anything if they happen to talk too fast. In order to get all of the notes in time in class, make sure not to write down EVERYTHING. Write the main points that you will need to know in the future. Minor details and writing every single word the teacher said is not necessary. Also, another thing that I would love to share with you is that utilizing online resources is SO helpful. The internet holds so many informational websites and videos that can help you understand ideas and class topics so much easier. My biggest mistake at the beginning of college was that I did not use resources like I should have. Now, they are my best friend. They break down information so that the student is better able to understand what is going on. Hope this is all helpful to you future college students!

Web-Enhanced Reading and Studying Strategies

When getting to college, everything gets thrown at you at once and it can become extremely overwhelming. I can personally vouch and say that I was not prepared for all of the homework and studying that needed to be done. So therefore, I can give some advice that can help you to avoid these situations. There are so many different online resources that can be used in helping in studying and writing papers. Flashcards are a huge helper when it comes to memorizing information and there are plenty of sites out there that allow you to make online flashcards, such as studyblue.com. Online resources similar to that allow you to save time and not stress so much. Using google or any search engine, you can search for any type of online resource you may need and college will seem a whole lot easier after you begin using them!

Another piece of advice I can give you is do NOT procrastinate. Procrastination leads to more stress that is unnecessary. I recommend making a schedule of when everything is due and setting certain amounts of time aside to work on assignments. When getting work done in a timely manner, you will feel like a weight has been lifted off of your shoulders. Also, studying for exams the night before is not in a student’s best interest. Give yourself a few days in advance to study smaller amounts in shorter time frames. This will allow for cramming not to occur and to retain information in a much healthier manner. All nighters are typical for college kids, but they are definitely not recommended. Studying in a strategic manner will allow for more sleep, less stress, and a healthier body!

Communicating & Collaborating on the Web

Netiquette is a major factor on how someone comes across on the internet and it sets a guideline for internet morals. Proper introductions, closings, and bodies of emails, blogs, etc. are always necessary in sounding professional to the reader or audience. Netiquette refers to the proper etiquette that the person behind the keyboard should be properly showing through the media. In high school, emails may not seem like a big deal but in college they are no joke. Professors, employers, and sorority executives in my case use email as the number one form of communication. Talking online with anyone should always be done in a professional manner. Put it this way: how you speak online is how they will view you in person. For example, I have learned through multiple emails with professors that a proper introduction at the beginning and closer at the end of the email is highly necessary. Their job title or position in organizations is usually listed below their name. Proper speech is key as well. Be straight to the point, using clear and correct grammar. Slang should be avoided at all costs. Another important aspect of an email is the subject line. Make sure to fill that in with a general idea of what the email will contain. Also, watch how words are written. For instance, all capital letters can signify yelling and anger. Be sure to write it how you mean to get it across. Overall, formal language and format on the internet reveals a professional communication and collaboration on the web.
