Year in Review

Global Awareness: As a sophomore at Ohio State, I have tried to take steps to improve my global awareness. I have recently added a double major in Modern Greek Studies which involves a large cultural component, and in the pursuit of the degree, I was able to spend the summer of 2018 in Greece for two months studying at the University of Athens. There, I continued to learn the language, and further familiarized myself with the cultural practices of the citizens of Greece.

Original Inquiry: I work in Dr. Kirby’s Neural Stem Cell research lab. Through my work in the lab, I was able to assemble and present a poster at the Undergraduate Research Festival detailing my progress in completing my undergraduate research thesis.

Academic Enrichment: My class plan shows my dedication to challenging myself because I am planning to take over 70 hours of higher level classes. I will be taking honors and graduate level courses through the Neuroscience major, and through the Modern Greek program. I chose the Neuroscience major because I thought it would best prepare me to apply for medical school, and I am very interested in how the body works.

Leadership Development: I am a member of Sigma Epsilon Phi, a cultural organization on campus. I am on the executive board and I am in charge of our philanthropy. I am currently in the process of applying for the presidency of the organization.

Service Engagement: As a native to Columbus, I am thankful to be able to continue my involvement in my community during the college year. I volunteer every year at the Columbus Greek Festival, and I consistently work throughout the year preparing the venue, and the food. Also within the Columbus Greek Orthodox Church, I volunteer my time packing lunches for the homeless, and coaching the church basketball team. During the basketball tournaments, I am responsible for 9 boys between the ages of 13-16 for the entire weekend. In addition to my work with the church, I volunteer at the James Hospital on campus once a week.

Artifacts

On Tuesday October 17th, 2017, I went to a Neuroscience bonfire. This event was for all the students in the Neuroscience pre-major, and major. I absolutely loved this because I am very excited to be able to start all of my major specific classes for Neuroscience and this bonfire introduced me to older people in the major that will be able to help me along my way, as well as share interests with me and give me a group of people that I can enjoy spending time with. The time I had at this bonfire was so much more than filling a requirement, and I truly think that I will be able to grow in the Neuroscience community due to the wonderful people that I have met.

About Me

My name is Nicholas Soulas, but I go by Nick. I am a member of the graduating class on 2021, and I am majoring in Neuroscience. I have wanted to go to The Ohio State University since the time I was about 4 years old. I was raised in a great home, with two loving parents and a sister two years my senior. Now that I am at Ohio State, I cannot wait to immerse myself in this community where I intend to grow in my academics, and my faith.

I take my classes very seriously, as I am planning on completing this degree and attending medical school. I want to become a licensed physician, specializing in either Pediatrics or Oncology. My family has a long history battling cancer, and I truly believe that I will be able to make a difference in my patients’ lives. I want to be involved in research of some sort, and I truly love volunteering and helping people any way I can. I am very excited to take these enormous steps in becoming the person I believe I was meant to be.

My identity is not complete without mentioning my faith. I am a Christian, and more specifically, I am a Greek Orthodox man. I am very proud to be strong in my faith and my culture and heritage. I am someone who goes to my church, and volunteers as often as I can, whether it be in the kitchen making meals for the annual Greek Festival, or just helping out people in need. I love to help people and my church is an incredible facet for me to express that.

I am looking forward to any and all opportunities that will introduce me to the incredible field of medicine, and Neuroscience. I would be a very hard worker, and/or research assistant.

To finish off, I want to say Go Bucks!
