Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. G.O.A.L.S.

The GOALS set for honors students are very helpful in planning the future to get the most out of the four years at The Ohio State University. I consider Global Awareness to be the most influential factor of all five goals.  It’s very important to be aware of different cultures that exist around campus. I came from Egypt, having a different background compared to the majority of students. I have already been trying to learn more about the American culture. In order to continue learning about different cultures, I started taking a Spanish class  (2202h) this semester because I’m planing to minor in Spanish. Also, I plan to study abroad in my second year in a Spanish speaking country . The second goal is original inquiry which is getting involved in  research. I’m a biology major on a pre-med track, so research experience is very important for applying to medical school in the future. I’m very passionate about research related to cancer. I’m currently taking molecular genetics class which is a very helpful class in giving insights of labs at the Ohio state. Dr. Hopper is very good source in finding the right research for students.  So, I have already talked to her to plan my research journey. She already recommended some names of researcher that might suit my personality and interests. I’m currently looking on researcher websites to learn about different labs and their work. I’m planing to join a lab during my sophomore year.

Academic Enrichment help honors students challenge themselves and discover new interests. I’m already taking three honors classes this semester. Also, I’m planing to choose challenging courses in the subjects I’m passionate about. My major is biology which has been my favorite subject since middle school. I plan to minor in Spanish because I have always been fascinated by different languages. My goal is to be able to speak at least four languages by the end of my senior year. Leadership development is a little bit of a struggle for me because I haven’t found any organization that interested me. However, I plan to join an art related organization next semester as a break from science related work. Leadership is very crucial in the medical field. I consider myself to be hard-worker that loves to collaborate with my peers to achieve our goals. Service  engagement is  a goal that I have been working on since I moved to the United States. I have been a volunteer at Riverside Methodist Hospital for four years. It helped me get an experience of hospitals and work setting. I plan on volunteering in other medical related organizations to build more connections and get involved in my community.
