While academic advisors and other campus offices are knowledgeable about campus resources, learning strategies, or wellness skills, many staff are unfamiliar with how to link students with community resources. The SOARS program bridges the gap between the academic, personal, and physical dimensions of support both on-campus and in the community.
The SOARS program promotes academic success by connecting students to resources, supporting their decision-making, and helping them learn and practice wellness skills. SOARS peer-professionals connect students to community-based resources to meet their basic needs, as well as campus resources for academic success. Our peer-professionals support students to clarify their goals and reach them. SOARS peer-professionals are also able to teach a variety of skills that support wellness such as advocacy, self-compassion, resilience, self-monitoring, help-seeking, and others.
Anybody may refer a student for SOARS support: advisors, RAs, hall directors, faculty and instructional staff, tutors, academic coaches… even the students themselves!
The SOARS program also partners with other student support offices on a variety of projects and presentations.
