My name is Coryn Gonzales (She/They), and I am the new admissions counselor. I am an Ohio State alumnus and first-generation college graduate. I received my BA with Research Distinction in Psychology in 2017 from the Newark Campus. Professionally, I come from a history of higher education and medical administration and am very excited for my path here at the College of Optometry. I am supported by my partner of nine years, Nalo (pronounced Nah-low), and fur-parent to my one-year-old cat, Kylo (yes, like Kylo Ren from Star Wars). I find my passion is embedded in helping students succeed both inside and outside of the classroom, and I look forward to helping prospective and current students find home here at The Ohio State University College of Optometry. If you ever need a listening ear, my door is always open!

Outside of work, my partner and I enjoy watching movies and TV, and are huge fans of Star Wars, Lord of the Rings (including The Hobbit), the Marvel Universe among several other films and shows. We also both play Dungeons and Dragons and even have a 3D printer to make our own miniature figures for the game. We love the outdoors, as long as it is not snowing, and frequently go fishing in the summer and fall. When we aren’t doing these things, I like to dabble in the arts: painting, photography, macramé, resin crafts, sewing … You name it and I have likely tried it! I even made my own outfit for the Renaissance Festival! I also like to brag that I am a pretty good home chef, with my most recent recipe I have perfected being Birria tacos. If you haven’t heard of Birria, I highly encourage you to look it up, it’s a game changer. I look forward to meeting and getting to know each of you!

Work on your Resume/CV this summer! Your future self will be glad you did …

It’s never too early to start! Remember the resume workshops we held in OptomEyes and Dr. Fries’ class this year? If not, we have you covered! Everything you need is on your class Carmen page in the “Prepare for your Job Search, Residency Match, or Other Post-Graduation Plans” module. Here you will find a recorded version of the resume workshop, a resume/CV template (with guidance!) a sample cover letter/letter of intent AND we even threw in a list of action verbs to help you write those bullet points! When you have a draft, contact Jen Bennett or Dr. Fries and we can help review your documents.
