The G.O.A.L.S. objectives outlined by the Honors and Scholars Center offers several perspectives on how take a well-rounded approach to an academic community. By being a member of a Scholars Program, I will be able to apply several of these points to my academic life and future career goals. I would like to pursue a career in scientific research following my undergraduate career. To achieve this, I believe that two of these points will be vital to my success. These points are global awareness and original inquiry.
Global awareness is a key aspect of conducting scientific research. During my interview project for STEM EE Scholars, I learned from faculty that collaborations with faculty from other institutions around the world is a common practice. By engaging with scholars from around the world, I will be able learn more about both scientific fields that intrigue me and global cultures. Each year of high school, I progressed through classes in the French language and culture. Although I felt that I was able to effectively learn the language in a classroom setting, I also recognized that many aspects of the culture and language could only be learned by interacting with those who live in the culture. During my time at Ohio State, I would like to take the opportunity to study and conduct research in France. This will allow me to further both my scientific and French language skills.
Original inquiry is vital to a researcher’s success in a scientific field. Ohio State offers several grants and summer programs through the Office of Undergraduate Research and Creative Inquiry. I plan on taking advantage of these opportunities by participating in research in Plant Pathology and Molecular Genetics. Ohio State summer research programs, such as the Next-Generation Evolutionary Biology program, offer a way for undergraduate students interested in research to spend a full summer working alongside faculty conducting game-changing research. Programs such as these will be beneficial towards guiding my research interests and career path.
