About Me

Hello! My name is Ben Smith and I am a first-year student in the STEM EE Scholars Program at Ohio State. I graduated from William Mason High School in Mason, Ohio in 2017. While at Mason, I participated in several extracurricular activities. I was involved in the music program and played clarinet in both concert and marching band. I was also involved with SIBS, a group that provides guidance to high school freshmen and leads monthly homerooms.

I plan to major in Molecular Genetics while at Ohio State and to minor in music. Ohio State offers so many opportunities to engage in research and was a strong reason why I chose to attend. I would like to work alongside faculty members on their research and hopefully conduct my own research while I am here! I am an an avid coffee drinker! I would like to conduct research on the coffee plant. I believe that through the rapidly evolving field of genetics, coffee can become a much more accessible, economical, and flavorful product.

I am currently interesting in attending graduate school to study biotechnology and further my understanding of the practical application of genetics. I see myself having an impact on the future by improving the future of the coffee industry and its producers.

I am also glad to be part of a university that focuses much of its efforts on giving back to the community around it. In 2016, I completed my Eagle Scout project at Fort Ancient, an educational nature preserve about 30 miles north of Cincinnati. One of the goals of my project was to enhance the learning opportunities for students that visit the site on field trips. I would like to continue this goal other students and the public in Columbus. This is possible through the STEM EE Scholars program and through others organizations, such as COSI.
