First Semester Reflection

I really enjoyed my first semester at the Ohio State University. I have also really enjoyed the Architecture scholars program, although I am not an architecture major, that has allowed me to meet a bunch of new people and do a ton of different activities. Furthermore, for the most part all of my classes have been really enjoyable and not as difficult as I had initially anticipated. Thankfully this semester I was able to complete a lot of my Gen. Ed requirements which will allow me to take some more classes related to my major: business. Next semester I am taking 3 of my business pre requisites classes which will enable me to get more involved in the business program at Ohio State. Additionally, I want to get involved in more student organizations on campus. One particular organization that I was thinking about was the Buckeye Capital Investors. I am really interested in what they have to offer because I am very interested in working on Wall Street along the Finance specialization of business. In the next year or so I would like to get an internship or the opportunity to shadow a professional in the world of finance. This internship or shadowing opportunity would fall under the Leadership Development and the Academic Enrichment categories of the Honors & Scholars G.O.A.L.S. guidelines. I will work more toward the G.O.A.L.S. guidelines by carrying on with my 2-year plan that will take me into the business core for the Fisher Business School. By following this plan and working hard in all my classes I can open up new doors of opportunities for myself to meet new people and expand my interests.

Columbus To Do List Part 2

For our second visit on our Columbus to do list my roommates and I went to Rocketfizz Soda pop and Candy Shop which is located in the Short North via a 10 minute bus ride on the #2 COTA bus. I really enjoyed everything that Rocketfizz had to offer in both their candy and soda selections. The entire store was filled with all the different types of candies and sodas that one could imagine. We all got 2 bottles of Jones’ soda and walked a little bit down the street to Chipotle for dinner. We sat down in Chipotle and drank our Jones’ sodas with Chipotle before getting back on the #2 bus and heading back to Haverfield. My favorite thing about Rocketfizz was the crazy flavors they had to offer in their sodas. They had drinks like bluberry/strawberry and birthday cake. I hope to go back there and try some more of their different drinks. I would recommend Rocketfizz for anyone who enjoys trying different types of sodas and candy.

For our third visit on our Columbus to do list my roommates and I went to Whit’s Custard which is also in the Short North just a little farther south from Rocketfizz. Whit’s was by far my favorite of our Columbus to do list visits. I ordered a vanilla milkshake which was very good while my two roommates ordered custard. The thing I liked the most about Whit’s was the seating within the store. They had room for plenty of people so it didn’t feel to cramped. We got to sit at three stools that were looking out the store front windows facing towards high street. Afterwards we walked across the street to the Melt where we ate dinner and had a good time before returning home. I would recommend Whit’s to anyone looking for a good desert place in Columbus or near the Ohio State Campus.

For our fourth visit on our Columbus to do list my roommate and I went to Greaters Ice Cream. We took an Uber over to Greaters and quickly ordered our deserts. I ordered a strawberry/banana smoothie while my roomates ordered sundaes. The smoothie was okay, but it had too much strawberry and not enough banana for my taste. I liked that Greaters had a good amount of room for people to sit down and eat their ice cream, however I didn’t like how far away the building was and how difficult it was to get to by bus. Afterwards we walked about halfway back to campus before taking a campus bus closer to Haverfield. Although Greaters wasn’t the best, it was still very good and I would recommend it to anyone who likes ice cream and doesn’t mind traveling over to Greaters.

For our last Columbus to do list my roommates and I went to Pattycake Bakery. Of all the visits we made this was my least favorite one. I didn’t like that there was no place to actually sit and enjoy the food inside the store. So instead we had to eat our food while we were walking to the bus stop. The food, however, was still pretty good, although it was a little expensive. I ordered a chocolate chip banana muffin which was good enough to justify the price. Overall, I would recommend Pattycake Bakery to anyone who is looking for decent baked goods, but not for finding a place to sit down and eat.

This assignment enabled me to learn a lot about the city of Columbus. By going to these different places we also were able to take a couple side trips to the surrounding local businesses and try them out as well. Completing this assignment has lead me to want to try the different restaurants in downtown Columbus. If I were giving advice to someone doing this project I would recommend that you go with a group of friends so that the experience is more enjoyable. I would also recommend that you plan ahead and space out your visits to something like once a week so that you are not pressed for time a couple days before it is due.

FOTOShop Vignette Project – Nate Smith

I learned a lot about the design process through the FOTOShop project. Probably the most important thing I learned about the design process is that it requires an incredible amount of detail, time, and effort. Our group selected the closed Tom+Chee building located on 1980 North High Street after we took a walk along High Street to find the space we felt was most under utilized. I would rate my group experience very highly due to how well we worked together and how good I thought our presentation was. The biggest issue with collaboration is finding the best time to get together and actually start working on the project. We could solve this issue in future groups by simply providing each person’s availability so it was easier to coordinate. Overall, I felt that I had a great group to work with and I would defintitely want to work with them again in the future.

Columbus To Do List Visit 1

Me and my roommates, Josh and Ryan, decided to go to Jeni’s ice cream to do the Ice Cream and Deserts Columbus To Do List. We are all big fans of deserts and sweets so this seemed like the perfect list for us to do. We took the COTA bus down High street and got to Jeni’s after about 15 minutes. We each got a couple of scoops of our favorite ice cream and sat down in the shop for a few minutes while we ate. I go the Milkiest Chocolate ice cream using the trio card I received at convocation. The ice cream was delicious and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a good ice cream place around Columbus. My favorite thing about our tip had to be the ice cream itself, because it was some of the best I ever had. However, the worst thing was the lack of seating inside the shop. The only place we had to sit was at little stools around a large wooden table which made it a bit uncomfortable to sit. However, overall the experience was very enjoyable. The atmosphere in the shop was fun and they had a wide selection of flavors to choose from. I also enjoyed the different works of art and signs that they had hanging on the walls which were all very beautiful and unique. I can’t wait to finish the rest of this to do list with my roommates. We have already made plans for our next four visits which should give us a great chance to see more of what Columbus has to offer and what other great shops there are to eat at.Jeni's Ice Cream

Scholar’s Mentor Interview — Theo Morrow

Me and my roommate Ryan were able to meet with our scholars mentor Theo Morrow to catch up and ask him a few questions about what it is like to be an Ohio State student. We met at the big steps in Knowlton to sit down for 20-25 minutes to have our interview.

In my interview I learned that Theo is from North Canton Ohio, which is home to the Hoover Vacuum. I learned that Theo is a very creatively minded person. He knew that he wanted to go into architecture since he was in the 4th grade and after his tour of Knowlton he was convinced that architecture was the major for him. He expressed his love for his other hobbies including sketching, painting, backpacking and playing piano. Although he did mention that he does not get many opportunities to play the piano now that he lives off campus. Theo is also involved in a couple student organizations including Servitecture and 112 Publications for which he occasionally rights articles for. I could tell by the way he talked about these organizations that he was very passionate about them and I may consider checking them out in the near future. Even as a business major I found my interview with Theo to be very helpful. He gave me some good advice regarding the type of electives I should be taking. He said that I should take a broad base of electives in order to find something that really interests me. Having a broad base of electives will make a more interesting person in the workplace and give me a better chance of getting interships. Theo also mentioned his latest project which was to design a building that will take the place of Jesse Owens Memorial. He told us about his professor who has a very abstract sense for architecture, which made his class really interesting.

Theo also mentioned some of his favorite off campus advantages of going to Ohio State. He mentioned watching the 2014 National Championship Game and afterwards gathering with the rest of the students in the Oval to celebrate. He expressed wishing he had been able to see more of what Columbus has to offer. He mentioned that some of his favorite experiences at Ohio State where going to house parties and hanging out with his friends around downtown Columbus. He also mentioned one of his worst experiences. He had his house broken into and had a large glass object thrown at him while he was sleeping, leaving a scar on his forehead.

Overall my interview with Theo was very enjoyable and I can’t wait to catch up with him again soon when he is not busy. After our meeting I feel that I have a better understanding of what type of guy Theo is and have a significantly better relationship with him than I did before our meeting.

10 Buildings that Changed America Reflection

After watching the PBS documentary titled, “10 Buildings that Changed America,” I have much deeper appreciation for the history of Architecture in America and the obstacles that stood in the way. One of the most important buildings we saw in the documentary was the Wainwright Building in St. Louis, Missouri. I think that this building had the largest impact on America’s modern built environment. The Wainwright building which was constructed in 1891 and designed by Louis Sullivan ushered in the age of skyscrapers to the American landscape. Being one of the first existing skyscrapers is incredibly significant given the current structure of American architecture. Every major city is the United States now has at least 1 major skyscraper that stretches closer to the clouds in the sky than even Sullivan could have imagined. These skyscrapers are now a staple of American society, representing the average American worker. Each floor is packed with office cubicles of people is shirts and ties typing away at a keyboard from 9am to 5pm. Another significant aspect of the Wainwright building was the attention to detail and design of the building that complemented its height. Its design was the source of inspiration for future architects to embrace the steel beams and supports of their buildings and highlight them as a fundamental part of the building’s design.

One significant building that I feel should have been included in the documentary is the Pentagon building. Originally built in 1941 it is an incredible and unique buildings in America. Despite the rising popularity of skyscrapers the Pentagon was constructed being rather low to the ground in comparison. It takes the unusual shape of a Pentagon, but even more interestingly they left an inner open-air pentagon that acts a courtyard for the building. This feature is quite ingenious because it serves two main functions. First, it provides a series of pathways to connect different portions of the outer ring of the building and secondly, it serves as a source of greenery that the building would otherwise lack due to the need for parking lots on the outside of the building.
