GOALS

G.O.A.L.S

Global Awareness

I plan to work towards global awareness by applying to international research programs and research-based study abroad programs.  I plan to be a research chemist, and being able to understand the differences in how research is conducted in other countries will better enable me to communicate my own research to people of other cultures.  In order to be a more appealing candidate for these research programs, I will involve myself in research at Ohio State.  I will also go to programs about undergraduate research and international research programs.

Original Inquiry

I definitely want to participate in undergraduate research at Ohio State, hopefully even starting this summer.  Initially, I plan to seek out opportunities to work with professors who are doing research in fields I’m interested in.  Later on, once I’ve gotten some experience, I plan to conduct my own research project and graduate with research distinction.  In particular I am interested in conducting research on solar panels or batteries, so before I start my own research project I’ll read plenty of information on those subjects so that I’ll have a better idea of what I’m looking for in a research project.

Academic Enrichment

My goal is to become a research chemist, so I will use my academic plan to plan a schedule with as many physical science classes as I can fit while still taking enough classes with a more liberal-arts bent to be a well-rounded person.  I also plan to focus on material sciences within my engineering minor in order to better understand the different materials I will be working with as a chemist.  I want to take a lot of honors courses, but I will try not to overload myself because I have had problems with stress from taking too many difficult courses in the past, and I don’t want to have those sort of problems again.  In particular I am excited to take my computational studies class next semester, because even though I generally don’t enjoy those types of classes as much as I do others, this one sounds interesting and more suited to my interests, so I am excited to see how it turns out.

Leadership Development

I want to improve my leadership abilities by learning how to better communicate and work with others.  I’ve always been somewhat shy and tended to work on my own when given the chance, but if I’m going to get anywhere as I scientist, I will need to learn how to work with other people and be able to share my thoughts with them without getting overwhelmed by nerves, particularly regarding public speaking.  Because of this, I would like to take some sort of public speaking class at some point, because unless I force myself to get better at talking to people, it won’t happen.  I would also like to seek out research opportunities where I will be working in groups, in order to force myself to learn to get along with and communicate with a group of people I don’t know.  This should help me get over my anxieties and become a better communicator and leader.

Service Engagement

I am currently involved in the SUSTAINS learning community, which has a number of community service events alongside its environmentally focused ones.  In particular, it has many service events that are also focused on the environment, such as helping out with the zero waste program at the Ohio Stadium during football games.  Being involved in these events allows me to help both the nearby community and the whole world at the same time.

Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. G.O.A.L.S.

[ “G.O.A.L.S.” is a place where students write about how their planned, current, and future activities may fit into the Honors & Scholars G.O.A.L.S.: Global Awareness, Original Inquiry, Academic Enrichment, Leadership Development, and Service Engagement. For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. Delete these instructions and add your own post.

Global Awareness: Students cultivate and develop their appreciation for diversity and each individual’s unique differences. For example, consider course work, study abroad, involvement in cultural organizations or activities, etc .
Original Inquiry: Honors & Scholars students understand the research process by engaging in experiences ranging from in-class scholarly endeavors to creative inquiry projects to independent experiences with top researchers across campus and in the global community. For example, consider research, creative productions or performances, advanced course work, etc.
Academic Enrichment: Honors & Scholars students pursue academic excellence through rigorous curricular experiences beyond the university norm both in and out of the classroom.
Leadership Development: Honors & Scholars students develop leadership skills that can be demonstrated in the classroom, in the community, in their co-curricular activities, and in their future roles in society.
Service Engagement: Honors & Scholars students commit to service to the community.]

Career

[“Career” is where you can collect information about your experiences and skills that will apply to your future career.  Like your resume, this is information that will evolve over time and should be continually updated.   For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. Artifacts

[Artifacts are the items you consider to be representative of your academic interests and achievements. For each entry, include both an artifact and a detailed annotation.  An annotation is a reflective description of the artifact that attempts to communicate its significance.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. About Me

[Your “About Me” is an introduction and should provide insight into who you are as a person and a learner.  This should include a picture of you that is appropriate in a professional/academic context. This information should be continually updated.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio.  Delete these instructions and add your own post.]
