Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. G.O.A.L.S.

The Honors & Scholars G.O.A.L.S. set a standard for my planned, current, and future activities. Leadership Development has been a particularly important theme, as I am part of the Mount Leadership Society Scholars. I have learned through Mount that leadership is not just taken on by the “person in charge” but is part of being a good team member. I have begun to show leadership as part of a team in Legacy Week. Legacy Week is a large service project (part of Service Engagement) that Mounties plan for months and execute in the month of February. Although I am not a team captain, my role as a team member is very important. All input is needed and my active participation is pertinent to Legacy Week’s success.

Career

[“Career” is where you can collect information about your experiences and skills that will apply to your future career.  Like your resume, this is information that will evolve over time and should be continually updated.   For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. Artifacts

Although artifacts are often considered tangible objects, my object is a living thing that comes with a story. In 2011, I rescued my dog from a local animal rescue. She has truly changed my life in both solidifying my career goals and enhancing my passion for service.

My dog was rescued from a puppy mill in Mississippi. She contracted heart-worms and have various other medical complications at the time of rescue. However, the vets at the animal hospital that she was transported to provided her with the care she needed to be able to join my family. The proper care was available due to research and development within the scientific community. After looking into her exact care, I learned that chemists make a large impact in researching and developing various forms of drugs and medicine. I am so grateful for the scientists who discovered methods of curing my dog. Although I do not know the exact field of chemistry I would like to pursue, I do know that I would love to do research.

Rescuing my dog also enhanced my passion for service. Rescuing a dog may only make a small impact, however, when many people join together, the difference it can make in the world is substantial. Since rescuing my dog, I have volunteered in animal hospitals as a form of service and giving back to my community.

About Me

My name is Hannagh Smith. I graduated from Gar-Field High School with the International Baccalaureate Diploma. As an IB Diploma recipient, I committed myself to many Creativity, Action, and Service projects. Throughout my junior and senior years, I completed over 150 hours of these projects. Some of my favorite projects included helping my peers. Throughout high school, I tutored my peers in Chemistry in order to help them pass the class to fulfill graduation requirements. I also become an active member of the Chemistry club at my school. This club, along with the tutoring, developed my passion in the field of Chemistry and the importance of advocating for STEM projects.

During my senior year, I received an opportunity to take part in the Women in Technology program at BAE Systems. This program was designed to provide women with an hands-on, interactive introduction to the field of engineering. This program broadened my approach to STEM projects, by providing me with important skills to broaden my perceptions within the science community. I was able to work with Mechanical, Electrical, and Software Engineers in projects such as soldering, packaging, and programming.

I hope to take part in Undergraduate Research at The Ohio State University. My current career goals include working in a lab setting and participating on a research team.
