Module 5: Web-Enhanced Listening and Viewing Strategies

Throughout my highschool days I was able to just float through the note taking process. I did not pay much attention to what I was writing, highlighting, or paying attention to while my teacher was instructing the lesson. I was able to do this and get good grades because highschool was easy for me. But as I began college, I soon got a wake up call. This is probably true for most college freshman. We all were top of our class in highschool, but when we came to college it was a whole new story. But with some of these tips I am about to share, I was able to improve my note taking which resulted in easier and better studying. Some of these tips can be found in the website https://open.lib.umn.edu/collegesuccess/chapter/4-4-got-notes/. These include tips for taking notes in certain styles such as lists, outlines, concept maps, and the Cornell method. For myself, I tend to find the outline method the most effective. I am able to create main ideas and write subheadings underneath to create important facts/ideas to go back and look over later. I find studying to be a lot easier when I use this method because I am able to remember what the main idea is and the main points that relate. I am also able to write down a lot quickly because I am only writing few key words. I feel like you have to be very involved and focused in class when using this method so you do not miss any important facts and main ideas. I hope this description helps you out and your note taking improves immensely!
