Community Service Log for Fall 2018

I participated as a volunteer for the Columbus Marathon on October 21st as well as at the Allstate Hot Chocolate 5k/15k on November 18th. I volunteered at the marathon for 4 hours and at the 5k for 6 hours. My volunteering included filling and passing out water cups as well as holding the finish line for the racers to run through. I am very grateful to have participated in these volunteer programs because they made me feel like a more active member of the Columbus community as well as giving me the opportunity to help others.

True Colors Reflection

The true colors activity is a personality test that categorizes you based on a series of traits that you rank from 1 to 4 (1 being least and 4 being most) until you calculate your total score and are placed into a specific color category. For this activity, I received an equal score in both the Green and Orange category. This means that I am both extremely logical and thought based but I am also very impulsive and prepared to adapt for any plan. Although I received equal scores for both colors, I think that academically I relate more to the green category and socially I relate more to the orange category. I will apply this information in my scholars group as well as in other teams as a way that I can better understand my strengths and weaknesses. I am now better able to recognize the ways in which being an “orange” makes me forward thinking and spontaneous but also the negatives which come with this as well, such as a lack of empathy and compassion. Similarly, I can identify that I am quick and logical which can also play to my advantage, but that I can struggle to value others feelings. By obtaining a better understanding of my own strengths and weaknesses, I can now serve as a better member of a group or team. All colors are necessary in order to provide balance and cohesion whilst completing a task, even if working with all one color may seem as though it would be potentially easier. Working with people of all the same color will be less ideal in practice than in theory because although they would all share the same strengths, they would also all share the same weaknesses thus making them weaker overall.  It is necessary to have diversity of thought in order to maximize results and grow.

Defining Leadership 8/23

The term leadership is usually utilized generically to exemplify someone that assumes a role of power. I do not necessarily think this is the only form of leadership and in regards to sports or wellness, I especially feel that a leader does not necessarily need to hold a form of power but rather muster a universal idea to encourage a group as a whole. I have seen leadership demonstrated by team captains throughout my years of high school sports and I have also seen leadership demonstrated by coaches. I would classify these examples as descriptive of leadership due to the ways which such peoples actions helped to inspire and assist the overall team  in achieving a goal. Forbes defines leadership as “a process of social influence, which maximizes the efforts of others, towards the achievement of a goal.” I closely concur with this definition and think that Coaches are able to inspire and encourage teams as well as better them in order to achieve both the team’s goal or individual players goals, thus in the context of sport or wellness, a coach or captain is the most obvious example of demonstrated leadership.

About Me

My name is Remy Sloves and I am going into my first year at the Ohio State University. I am hoping to be a Sports Industry major with a potential minor in Business. In the future, I would like to work for a professional Sports Team in their finance or marketing department.  I am from Manhattan Beach, California which is a small beach town within Los Angeles. Given the warm weather, water polo is an extremely popular sport in my area and I began playing in sixth grade. Through multiple years of water polo at the club level and then four years on varsity, my passion for water polo has continued throughout my middle school and high school career, I am also considering playing in college as well. Unfortunately, I have suffered a series of sports related injuries which have forced me to focus on my wellness for up to the duration of my season junior year. The Dunn Sport and Wellness Scholars provides me with the unique opportunity to be a part of an organization that not only is centralized around sports and wellness but also on higher education. I hope to participate in intramurals as well as become involved in trips affiliated with the OAC given my passion for the outdoors. My hobbies include going to concerts, spending time with my friends and family, playing with my dog, camping, listening to music, yoga, exploring LA, and of course, waterpolo. I also have an interest in traveling and hope to have the opportunity to go abroad at least once during my time at OSU. I am thrilled to begin my involvement in Ohio and look forward to all the experiences being a DSWS scholar will bring. Go Bucks!
