I’ve attached a copy of my resume for potential employers to review, however, if you are not a potential employer and wish to see what I’ve been up to in the past few years, feel free to take a gander!

Bio Scholars at COSI

scholars-eventIn October the Biological Sciences Scholars group along with other science related scholars groups took a trip to COSI. While we were there we checked out the different exhibits and attractions. We were even able to attend a show explaining the phenomena of static electricity. I was fortunate enough to be selected to be a volunteer in the show, demonstrating how static electricity can travel from one person to another while they are touching.

Welcome!

Salutations and welcome to my honors and scholars e-portfolio! Here you will find information about me, my academics, and how I stay active outside of school. I hope you enjoy your time here!

Semester in Review

Although I have only attended college for a few short months, I have already begun to notice changes in myself. In the time I’ve been here, I have gone from a high school senior with little to no involvement in extracurricular programs outside of band to a college freshman in over 5 cultural, and academic clubs and organizations. Each program and club has helped and influenced me in different ways. Coming from a primarily white high school, there weren’t a lot of clubs made for people like me. I could only express myself culturally at home with my family or with the few black friends I had. Being on a campus like OSU has changed all of that for me. With clubs like the Ethiopian Eritrean club and the Black Student Association I can come together with people similar to me and talk about life, the news, and society. The Minority Engineering Program has also helped me believe that there are people on this campus that want to see me succeed. I didn’t get that kind of feeling in high school as much as I do here. I believe because of that, I have focused more on my studies. Being in the Biological Sciences Scholars Program has helped me to become more involved in community service. Before becoming involved in the program, I had very little community service under my belt. I didn’t realize how rewarding and fun it could be to get a group of friends together and help people and animals in need. Overall, I believe I have become a better person since I’ve come to campus. I’m more involved in the campus community and I am able to express myself in ways I wasn’t able to before.

G.O.A.L.S.

Currently, my ultimate goal is to become a chemical engineer. I’m not entirely sure what kind of chemical engineer I want to be at the moment but I figure, once I’ve determined what my strengths and weaknesses are, I’ll be able to choose. To achieve this goal, I will need to make a list of short term goals I can accomplish within the next four years, two years, year, semester, month, week and day.

My goals for this semester are to get a good start to the year academically and to develop a routine of community service and involvement at OSU. To achieve this first goal, I will need to quickly become familiar with resources I can utilize on campus for academic assistance if I need assistance. I will also need to develop good study habits. The only real way to do this is through trial and error until I find I study style that works best for me. Being in the Biological Scholars community, I have already started to develop a routine of community service once or twice a month. Although, I hope to continue my community service even when I am no longer in the bio scholars program. As of right now I am in 8 programs, organizations, and clubs at OSU from Knitting and Crafting Club to Ethiopian and Eritrean club to the Minority Engineering Program. I might have to limit my involvement to only a 3 or 4 clubs and organizations if I get too overwhelmed.

My Overall goals for this year are to get at least a 3.8GPA and to get accepted into the chemical engineering major for the autumn semester next year. To get accepted to the chemical engineering major for autumn I will need at least a 3.2GPA. If I accomplish my goal of getting at least a 3.8GPA I will achieve my second goal. To get a 3.8GPA I will need to study hard. I can already tell Math 1172 and Math 2177 are going to be my biggest challenges this year so if I get the help I need, going to office hours and the math tower for tutoring, I should be fine. I also hear developing a good relationship and a good reputation with the professor is a great way to get a couple points on a final or midterm. So if a professor can bump me up from an A- to an A, that would help a lot with my goal.

As of right now I’m not sure what my goals for the next 4 years will be. However, I know that I want to pursue a graduate education. To do this I will need to apply to a graduate school.  I also would like to intern at Dell or another company between my junior and senior years. This will help me apply the skills I learned in school to the real world. The Minority Engineering program and other organizations can help me find an internship that would be the best fit for me.

In high school, I didn’t do a lot of community service. I helped with band events, but that was basically all the volunteer work I did. I feel as though I missed out on an important part of high school by not volunteering more, which is part of the reason I wish to make up for lost time by volunteering in college. I also didn’t participate in many clubs in high school besides band. The amount of clubs available to students at OSU allow me to pursue my interests beyond band, which I really enjoy. During high school I developed some good study habits that worked for me which I have started using now in college. Most of the habits are still effective, however, in high school I never went to the teacher when I needed help. I hope to change this in college by utilizing the different tutoring facilities on campus.

Abstract

In my e-portfolio you will find a short description of myself, my goals, my past community service, and my future plans. The purpose of this portfolio is to inform potential employers and others of the activities I have participated in during my time at The Ohio State university. Going through this portfolio you will get a taste of who I am as a person. I have highlighted my goals for the year as well as projects I have already participated in. I will be updating this portfolio as I complete more events.

Artifacts

artifact-2This is the Patrick Gilmore Band Award for leadership. It is awarded to one senior in the band program who has demonstrated outstanding and influential leadership skills in and outside of the band room. This award means a lot to me because I never really considered myself a leader, but apparently the staff of the band program saw something in me that I didn’t see myself.
