Year in Review

Autumn 2015

Looking back at the past semester the changes that have been made in my personal and academic life have been profound, allowing me to have the positive experience that has been my first semester at The Ohio State University. After taking classes on the collegiate level I have discovered how I must change my academic effort compared to High School, leading to a change in how I approach problems and generally how I approach events that come up in my life in general. Off of that the experience of being at such a long campus has allowed me to grow as a person, expanding the opportunities that have presented themselves for me such as joining the Speech and Debate team which has steered my academic choices towards communication and developing those communication  skills that I can apply day to day and in the future. These past few months have been an eye opening experience, and I will carry these experiences onward in life.

This trophy physically represents the culmination of years of dedication and experience from taking part in the Speech and Debate community. By joining debate I was allowed the opportunity to expand my knowledge and education through the exploration of each topic of debate, and develop my communication skills which continue to help me to this day. Further the debate team has given me a sense of drive and dedication that no other opportunity or activity had instilled in me before. Not only did the program instill in me good ethics to life my life by, but gave me connections for finding opportunities to give back and find experience. The debate community expanded the places from which I met people and changed how I approached and interacted with each of those new individuals. Without this activity I doubt that I would be the person I am today.

About Me

Hello !

My name is Kyla Simon, and I am a first year Microbiology major in the Biological Science Scholars program.

I have a long history of involvement in multiple fields of science, with a concentration on the biological sciences in particular, choosing this route for the basis of my educational choices.

A large part of my spare time has been dedicated to community service, and extracurricular programs focusing on academic clubs and competitive teams such as Debate and Science Olympiad that I was a part of for 4 and 7 years respectively, that I have found success in and expanded my interests through. Competing on teams and communicating with other people has become some of my favorite ways to enrich my general experiences in life.

Aside from purely academic involvements I have a passion for the arts, having played the Viola and taking part in Orchestra for 8 years and being an avid painter for most of my life, focusing on figure drawing and general interpretations of nature.

At Ohio State I plan on moving towards my goal of being involved with research involving microbial infection and human diseases, focusing on the study of highly infectious agents such as HIV/AIDS.

I hope this could help you get to know me a little better, and thank you for reading !
