Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness:  I plan to cultivate global awareness by studying abroad at some point in my college career, preferably during the summer.  A particular study abroad experience that would especially pertain to me is the Psychology and Culture in Europe program.  This would expose me to different views in psychology, which would greatly benefit me academically and intellectually as a psychology major.  Spending time in Europe would also allow me to experience cultures outside of the United States, and even Ohio, which I have never done before.

Original Inquiry:  I plan to graduate with Honors Research Distinction by developing an undergraduate research thesis.  This research will likely be in the field of psychology, specifically abnormal psychology.  My ultimate career goal is to work with people suffering from mental illness, so conducting research on this would help me not only understand research in the social sciences, but also help me learn more about the lives of people that it affects.  In addition, I would like to cultivate a professional relationship with a faculty member in order to help them with a research project they are working on.  Whether this is helping in a laboratory setting or doing clerical work, it will expose me to the various and multidisciplinary work that goes into research.

Academic Enrichment:  I am currently striving for exceptional academic achievement by taking an honors psychology course, which is important since psychology is my major.  I plan to continue to take honors psychology courses.  In addition, since I am on a pre-medicine track, I will take challenging, upper-level science courses (such as biochemistry, anatomy, etc.).

Leadership Development:  I plan to continue my leadership development by getting involved in student organizations.  I am currently in Ohio State’s Running Club, and I plan to run for an officer position next year as I learn more this year about how the club functions on an organizational level.  In addition, I plan to volunteer for the North Central Mental Health suicide hotlines call center next year when I have become more accumulated to college workload and life.  This will help me learn how to guide people in a crisis to a safe decision.

Service Engagement:  I plan to get involved in community service by, as mentioned before, volunteering for a suicide hotline.  In addition, I am involved in SDES (Students for Diversity in Education through Service).  This is a student organization where we volunteer at various locations, particularly at places that cater towards LBGTQIA services.  This also will help me learn more about different cultures and diversity in addition to participating in community service.
