About Me

Hello! My name is Tawny Shu and I am a first year student at The Ohio State University. I was born and raised in California and I am a prospective Industrial Design student. My parents are from Taiwan so I am also able to speak fluent Chinese since it’s the best way for me to communicate with them. I have lots of different hobbies and I love learning new things. I currently run a small business for crochet where I make crochet items such as plushies, purses, and outfits. In addition I to selling through Instagram I also have an online shop with Big Cartel where I list ready-to-order products. Another creative outlet I enjoy would be singing, I have published two songs that I written and recorded in my room. I used an online distributor and the songs are available to stream on services like Spotify, Tidal, Apple Music, etc. I was also a swimmer and waterpolo player at my high school. I’ve been playing water polo since sophomore year of high school, and I’ve been swimming since middle school. I set two records in my sophomore year in swimming, earned the MVP award during swim season, and earned the most improved award during water polo season. I’m a very active and creative person and I love exercising, not only my body but also my mind. I hope to be able to expand my way of thinking and designing during my time here at Ohio State.

What is Design?

Design to me is something that can solve problems, while also being a skill that anyone can learn. It is something that I feel is such an important and useful part of life that, once I realized that I have the ability to create something that could potentially help others it makes me more passionate than ever to work hard. Something that excites me about design would be the endless amount of possibilities and opportunities to create beautiful works of art, while also solving problems. It could be innovative and save the world or it could also be making something look better or more aesthetic, but regardless design is something that will always be needed and will always be useful.

Previous Work

1. A magazine cover I made in my CTE Graphic Design course.
2. A crochet mushroom drawstring bag I designed and created.
3. A crochet koala bucket hat I designed and created.

1. For this project my classmates and I took photos of each other for our magazine cover and then proceeded to design the mock covers in Adobe Photoshop.

2. For this project I received a custom order for a mushroom drawstring bag, and I designed the bag and then crocheted it as a commission.

3. For this project I designed a crochet koala bucket hat and then crocheted it for fun. I have a whole collection of animal-themed bucket hats including a frog, bear, unicorn, monkey, chick, and a cat. These have all been posted on my Instagram @wontawn.crochets .

Goals

What I hope to accomplish from this program is a more in depth understanding of design and the fundamentals that make it up. I hope to be creatively challenged and to meet peers who push me to be better and inspire me. All I really want from my college experience and from this program would be to learn as much as I can and to continue learning even after the course is over.
