Space and Time Walk: Process

Research

Some research I did for the Space and Time Walk project included some notes learning about different compositions for pictures and different tips that helped with taking pictures. This was useful because we then went outside to take a few pictures of things that caught our eye. We also did a exercise where we walked around the classroom and examined six different maps. Then in our notes we wrote down observations and comparisons of the maps. We found what made them different and how they were all similar. This helped us figure out what we were doing and it helped me get some ideas for what my own map should look like.

Exercises

The first exercise I did to create an advertisement for the location I chose. I wrote down things that stood out about it and what were good reasons for going there. It helped me come up with my idea for the theme of my map. The next exercise I did was I went on google earth and I mapped out the location I had chosen and how to get to it. Then I walked along the path and I experienced it so I could write some instructions on how to get there and the experience of it. I wrote basic instructions and then I wrote poetic instructions to explain the feeling of the path as I followed it. I also took some photos of the path and how to get there.

Iteration

I created a basic map of my path and important buildings. This was to get an idea for what I needed to draw. Then I created an image that showed my poetic idea of the map that I wanted. I created the image based on the feeling that I wanted my audience to feel. My main focus was how Mirror Lake Eatery sells comfort food and so I focused on the comfort part. I made each element of the map a different object that contributes to one’s comfort. Then I felt there was a lot of excess space and I asked for help from a friend for any ideas. They helped inspire me to create a drawing of a blanket covering the rest of the map that was unused and turn it into the legend. This allowed all parts of the map to be useful and creative.

Production

For the production of my final composition I first mapped the route to my destination. I searched it up on google earth and traced the route, then I actually went out and walked the route to get a feel for it. I used the drawing of the actual map and I created a preliminary sketch of just an overall very basic map that was something I could basically use to get to Mirror Lake Eatery. Then after I created a quick sketch of it I then thought about how I would get my idea across for the comfort aspect. Then I replaced certain key points of the map with items that made me think about comfort. I used a scarf, pillows, fluff balls, and a sleeping mask for the different parts of the map. Then I created the legend on top of a blanket to further convey the comfort theme.

I started off with a sketch in pencil and then filled it in with sharpie, paint markers, and colored pencils.
